TONY BISH FAT & SASSY CHARDONNAY 2017 is available to buy in increments of 1
Tony Bish is one of Hawkes' Bay's most respected winemakers (especially with Chardonnay) and this is a very good reflection of those skills with his own label. The wine shows immediate impact on the palate, with plenty of fruit-forward richness, and then carries through onto the finish. It is the kind of wine that sneaks up on you with its power.
Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"This Chardonnay has a full, broad nose of refreshing and bright aromas of ripe yellow stone fruits and citrus fruits along with an edge of creamy and nutty barrel-ferment and spicy oak notes, subtle lemon-curd and buttery MLF notes. The palate has flavours of citrus fruits melded with creamy barrel-ferment and nutty, spicy oak. The mouthfeel is enriched by integrated layers of lemon-curd and buttery MLF nuances. The palate has an underlying freshness with acid poise, and the wine flows along a fine-textured line with creamy nutty notes leading to a sustained finish with toasty oak."
5 Stars & 18.5-/20 Raymond Chan, February 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Bright, light golden-yellow colour with some depth, paler on the rim. The nose is softly full with aromatic citrus and tropical fruit aromas harmoniously melded with notes of nutty oak and subtle creamy barrel-ferment elements, and a hint of buttery MLF. The nose is beautifully integrated and elegant in presentation with fragrant detail. Medium-bodied, the palate has up-front but stylishly proportioned flavours of ripe tropical fruits and yellow stonefruits integrated with a refined layering of creamy oak and nutty lees, and nuanced of butter. The fruit forms a concentrated core with a degree of roundness and unctuousness, balanced by lacy acidity. The wine flows along a very smooth line, leading to a lightly nuanced, moderately long finish. This is an elegantly concentrated, up-front Chardonnay with ripe tropical fruit integrated oak and lees notes on a smooth palate. Match with poultry and pork over the next 4 years. Mendoza and clone 15 fruit from Bridge Pa and the Upper Dartmoor, one-third fermented in barrel, one-third in a new 9000 L Taransaud oak vat and one-third in stainless-steel with oak contact to 13.0% alc., the wine undergoing extensive batonnage and 100% MLF."
5 Stars 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Wonderfully ripe and generously expressed, the inviting bouquet shows grilled peach, vanilla, hazelnut and nougat characters with a hint of butterscotch notes. The palate delivers excellent weight and rounded mouthfeel, brilliantly complemented by creamy texture and refreshing acidity. A delectable young chardonnay offering fabulous drinking. At its best: now to 2020."
