We were shown a sample of this wine a couple of months ago and luckily secured stocks of it before it achieved the remarkable feat of winning the Trophy for best Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2017 NZIWS against 14 other Gold medal winners in a very hotly contested class of Cabernets from around the world. Three Dark Horses is project the of former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead with his father Alan and 90 year old grandfather Frank - the Three Dark Horses. Their focus is on producing small batch, hand made, and affordable wines of character sourcing grapes from old vines throughout the McLaren Vale. Best described as a "Blockbuster" - it is inky dark with a big, mouthfilling palate, totally over delivering for the price. From a very small production - we have grabbed as much as we can with more stock on the water from Australia.
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Frank Broomhead Snr, my Great Grandfather, worked with horses his whole life. In 1920, at seventeen years of age, he had a job mustering up wild horses to send to the sub-continent for Indian army re-mounts. One fateful day, whilst driving them down Parramatta Road to the docks in Sydney, a large mob became spooked and shot off down Johnson Street, Annandale, causing havoc to stunned onlookers. The young Frank was given the job of chasing them down and quickly had them back under control. Ever since that day his skill and intuition with those wild horse became the stuff of legend and consequently he was affectionately dubbed 'Bandy Legs'.

This wine is a tribute to him. It shows rich red fruits with spicy overtones. Like the horses, it is a little bit wild, and like my Great Grandfather, it will get better with age..."
