Occasionally we come across a Pinot Gris that really makes us sit up. This is one. Te Whare Ra are a Certified BioGro, boutique Marlborough producer, crafting small quantities of exceptional wines. This Pinot Gris is certainly one to realise the difference quality can make to this often ubiquitous variety.

"Pinot gris can be exciting, refined and texturally satisfying. And this is done exactly right. A stylish rendition, the elegantly expressed bouquet shows white stone fruit, fresh pear, floral and subtle spice characters, followed by a finely textured palate that is beautifully weighted and elegant. The wine offers fabulous texture and mouthfeel, while delivering vibrancy and bright fruit flavours. At its best: now to 2022."

"Bright, even, pale straw-yellow colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is softly full with delicate and intricate aromas of white stonefruits, lifted florals, hints of pears and honeysuckle, and a very fine minerally edge. Dryish to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has good depth of rich white stonefruit and pear flavours, with nuances of honeysuckle and minerals. The palate is elegant in proportion with fine phenolic textures providing good linearity, and lacy acidity enlivening the mouthfeel. This has good energy and vigour, and carries to a subtly nuanced finish of stonefruits and florals featuring purity and delicacy. This is a beautifully pure and refined, dryish Pinot Gris with white stonefruit, pear, floral and honeysuckle flavours showing with a degree of vigour. Match with mildly spicy Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 4+ years. Fruit from the TWR ‘Home Block’, hand-picked and hand-sorted, some parcels given skin contact, the fruit fermented in stainless-steel tank with 20% in seasoned French oak, to 13.5% alc. and 5.5 g/L RS, the barrel portion undergoing batonnage, and all of the wine aged on lees. Certified BioGro organic. 805 cases made."
