Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Brilliant gold with an edge of bright green, Elston ’15 is like a Hawke’s Bay peach picked fresh from the tree. Intricate aromas of ripe stonefruit, nectarine, lemon zest and honey soften into Crème brûlée, citrus and roast nuts. Crisp chardonnay fruit balanced against fine, refreshing acidity gives this wine immaculate poise. Te Mata Estate’s leading lady, Elston ’15 is chardonnay royalty."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Excellent definition and integration of fruit, oak and acidity; inviting aromas of stone fruit, rockmelon, vanilla, brioche and cedar lead to a concentrated palate that is elegantly weighted and beautifully styled with succulent fruit flavours and creamy texture. The wine flows seamlessly to a lingering expansive finish, and promises to develop gracefully."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"One of New Zealand's most illustrious Chardonnays, Elston is a stylish, intense, slowly evolving Hawke's Bay wine. At around four years old, it is notably complete, showing concentration and finesse. The grapes are grown and hand-picked principally at two sites in the Te Mata hills at Havelock North, and the wine is fully fermented in French oak barriques (35 per cent new), with full malolactic fermentation. The pale straw 2015 vintage is mouthfilling and still very youthful. Weighty and sweet-fruited, it has peachy, slightly spicy flavours, integrated oak, balanced acidity, and a tightly structured, poised and persistent finish. Best drinking 2018+."
5 Stars & 19.0/20 Raymond Chan, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Bright, even, pale straw-yellow colour. The nose is very elegant and tightly bound, somewhat restrained initially, but extremely refined, unveiling white stonefruit, grapefruit and mealy complexities, with nutty oak detail and creamy barrel-ferment elements. Medium-bodied, the fruit is rich, detailed and very vibrant, the white stonefruit and citrus flavours complexed by layers of mealy and nutty oak, unfolding creamy barrel-ferment and MLF nuances. The fruit richness is enlivened by crisp and taut acidity, and driven by subtle alcoholic power, leading to a very long and sustained, refined finish with toasty oak elements. This is beautifully refined, balanced and complex, and shows its full character with aeration. 5-6 years ahead of it. Fruit WBP and fully barrel-fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in new and seasoned French oak, on lees with full MLF."
92/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Bold style, and not lacking in flavour. If one of those people who pine for richer days of Chardonnay should ask you to recommend a wine, then I reckon this will hit then spot, funds permitting. Peaches sizzled in butter, sage and clove, grilled nuts and ruby red grapefruit. It’s full bodied, savoury and nutty, layered with spice and caramel, but cut into shape with tangy lime acidity, finishing bright and savoury at once."
