Te Mata is as focused on quality as it is on innovation. When winery owner John made the first vintage of Coleraine in 1982, he opened the eyes of his peers to the potential for making top wine from a blend of Bordeaux varieties in Hawkes Bay. Good wines are now common place, but Coleraine still leads the pack with a style that grows more refined every year.
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"First, a bouquet of violets, roses, lavender and pure cassis, followed by a banquet of blackcurrant, fragrant wild strawberry and pitch-black cherry, laid out over sweet cedar, and fine, supple French oak. Always floral, always concentrated, always poised – Coleraine ’15 is galaxy-dark with flashes of magenta and brilliant purple. Alive with charm, texture and energy, this is a multi-generational wine of immense cellaring potential."
5 Stars & 98/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"The wine has everything in place, and nothing out of place. It is striking and restrained at the same time, and delivers youthful charm of classic young Bordeaux, offering concentration, purity and complexity all in this gracious package that is Coleraine ‘15. Cassis, dark plum, violet, cigar and roasted almond lead to a palate that is perfectly proportioned and detailed with focus and structure, wonderfully enhanced by delectable fruit flavours and elegant oak infusion. Seamless and persistent with a promise to develop magnificently."
5 Stars & 19.5/20 Raymond Chan, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Very dark, deep, near impenetrable black-red colour, with a slightly lighter edge. The nose is beautifully elegant with stylish proportions and expressed with finesse, showing ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruit with cassis liqueur, lifted by fragrant dark red florals, subtle notes of dark herbs, and enriched by pencilly oak. Medium-full bodied, the fruit sweetness and richness is the immediate feature on the palate with concentrated and intense, layered flavours of blackberries and blackcurrants, cassis and black plums, along with herbs, floral elements and minerals, unfolding pencilly oak. The fruit richness is balanced by considerable tannin extraction, the mouthfeel very fine-textured and powdery. This has an underlying vitality, freshness and power, carrying the plush fruit flavours to a very long, lingering, textural finish. This is a classically structured, ageworthy Cabernet blend with refined opulence. 10-15 years. A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the fruit hand-picked and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 17 months in predominantly new French oak barrels."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"Breed, rather than brute power, is the hallmark of Coleraine (correctly pronounced Cole-raine rather than Coler-aine), which since its first vintage in 1982 has carved out an illustrious reputation among New Zealand's claret-style reds. In all vintages since 2007, Cabernet Sauvignon has been the predominant variety. At its best, it is a magical Hawke's Bay wine, with a depth, complexity and subtlety on the level of a top-class Bordeaux. The grapes are grown in the Havelock North hills, in the company's warm, north-facing Buck and 1892 vineyards, and the wine is matured for 17 to 20 months in French oak barriques, predominantly new. The 2015 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (54 per cent), Merlot (36 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (10 per cent). A typically stylish, authoritative wine, it is deep and very youthful in colour, with highly concentrated, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, showing notable density, poise, structure and complexity. Revealing obvious potential for long-term cellaring, it's best cellared until at least 2022."
96+/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Coleraine is a beautiful wine, and I’d venture that it’s New Zealand’s Grange equivalent, only it comes from one place, is much cheaper, and to my tastes, is significantly better and more interesting. So floral, so pretty, and yet masculine too. Roses, violets, bay leaf, baking spice and biscuit oak, plum, black cherry and raspberry. Medium bodied, inky black tea tannin, laced with tobacco, pitch perfect acidity, deep fruit with a spray of dried herb lending perfume and contrast. Rich but contained, a slurry of grainy tannin on a very long finish. How wonderful and good is this wine? In short, very."
Yvonne Lorkin, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Yes it’s 2017, yet in wine land the big guns from 2015 are only just being got out. The March 1 release of Coleraine, New Zealand’s most famous red wine, marked its 35th anniversary. Designed to age not across years, but across generations, it’s an assemblage (‘assom-blarge’ if you’re struggling) of cabernet and merlot from Te Mata’s oldest vineyards in the Havelock North hills. Left for a minute or seven in the glass, it unfurls layers of complex spices and bouquet-garni notes. Boasting a core of dark boysenberry, cocoa, fruitwood smoke and florals, the tannins are expansive and muscular, yet it boasts a lovely sophisticated silhouette. This wine needs to lay down somewhere cool and dark for at least a decade, and I mean ‘at least’. Drinking this vintage any earlier, is basically committing infanticide. Sip with: Rare eye fillet steak sometime in the 2030’s"
