"Violet, bay leaf, black fruit, almost liquorice, mocha, baking spices and cedar. Medium bodied, black fruit laced with liquorice and tobacco, a fleshy mass of tannin and dark chocolate, cool clean acidity, and very long finish, all black tea and perfume in the aftertaste. Chewy satisfaction and a little flamboyance in every mouthful. Love this."

"Positioned below its Coleraine stablemate in Te Mata's hierarchy of Hawke's Bay, claret-style reds, since 1995 Awatea has been grown at Havelock North and in the Bullnose Vineyard, inland from Hastings. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc - with a splash of Petit Verdot in most years since 2001 - it is hand-harvested and matured for 15 to 18 months in French oak barriques (partly new). Compared to Coleraine, in its youth Awatea is more seductive, more perfumed, and tastes more of sweet, ripe fruit, but it is more forward and slightly less concentrated. The wine can mature gracefully for many years, but is also typically delicious in its youth. The classy 2015 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (46 per cent), Merlot (43 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (11 per cent). Already highly approachable, it is full-coloured, with a fragrant bouquet, mouthfilling body and rich blackcurrant, plum, herb and spice flavours. A classic claret-style red, warm and savoury, it's likely to be at its best 2020 onwards. Fine value."

"Dark, deep, black-hearted red, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly concentrated with ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruit aromas with nuances of tobacco and lifted oak. The aromatic are deep and intense, with breadth and proportion. Medium-full bodied, the palate possesses deeply concentrated, ripe flavours of blackberries, blackcurrants and dark-red plums. Complexing herb, tobacco and aromatic oak detail add complexing interest. The fruit is supported by very fine-grained, but considerable tannin extraction providing body, depth and a core of presence. The acidity is softly ripe and fine, and balanced with the textures. This has a completeness and the balance lends approachability. The wine has a very long, lingering sweet finish, unveiling cassis elements. This is beautifully ripe and balanced for keeping 8-10 years. A blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc, the fruit hand-picked and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in new and seasoned French oak."
