Platinum Medal & Best NZ Pinot Noir - Decanter World Wine Awards 2017
A fantastic result - deservedly taking out the top spot for New Zealand Pinot Noir at the recent Decanter World Wine Awards in the UK is this modestly priced, mid-tier wine from Te Kairanga in Martinborough. Described by Decanter as "Beauty in a bottle" The Runholder Pinot Noir is rich and plush and reflects a very good vintage, well established vineyards and deft winemaking by the very talented and experienced John Kavanagh.
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Our Runholder Pinot Noir is crafted from parcels of fruit from our home vineyards and offers flavours of rich, dark cherries, spice, and hints of earthiness. A velvety texture is accented by subtle oak on the long finish."
95/100 Decanter
"Tight, youthful and elegant Pinot Noir with a strong regional character of ripe plum/berry, violet and Oriental spice, supported by peppery tannins. Good potential. Beauty in a bottle."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"Stylish and attractive, the wine displays dark berry, plum, clove and game characters with hints of dried herbs and cedar. The palate is beautifully weighted and focused, and delivers excellent fruit purity combined with lovely savoury undertones, making the wine engaging and delightfully appealing. Tannins are super fine and very long on the finish. At its best: 2017 to 2024."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, November 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"Dark, deep, ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the edge with youthful purple hues. This has a soft and finely presented nose with well-concentrated aromas of dark-red cherry and berry fruit with suggestions of plums and liquorice melded with red florals, dark herbs, oak spice and nuances of minerals. Medium-full bodied, the palate features bright, juicy and plush flavours of dark-red berry fruits and plums with layers of liquorice, herbs and spices lifted by red floral elements. The fruit forms a concentrated core with sweetness and richness, and is supported by fine-grained tannin extraction with subtle background acidity providing energy and tension. The wine carries to a rich and juicy, fine-textured finish with lingering flavours of ripe berry fruits and plums. This is a rich and plush, dark berry fruited Pinot Noir with plum and liquorice notes and a fine-structured palate. Match with lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 6+ years. 36% Abel, 22% 777, 17% clone 6, 11% 10/5, 6% 115 and 4% each 667 and clone 5 fruit, fermented with 5% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 25% new French oak barriques."
