Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Since 2014 we have been making a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted in 2000 and 2001. A varietal bouquet with dense black fruit and cigar box notes. The wine has rich blackcurrant and blackberry flavours, together with spicy notes, a hint of leather and good tannic structure. It is a great wine to cellar."

5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, March 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Dense, powerful cabernet sauvignon with cassis, blackberry, dark chocolate, black olive, cedar and spicy oak flavours. A tight, youthful wine that is a hot prospect for the cellar. Strongly varietal, with firm structure of ripe tannins. A classic cabernet"

Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"A concentrated dark berry core with aromas of blackberry, clove and compote, black currant, marmite and fresh violet then scents of other brown spices, granite, toasty barrel and sweet vanilla. Youthful, powerful and new. On the palate – very taut with a firm texture driven by tannins and acidity. The core of black fruit flavours offer contrast and promise with flavours that reflect the bouquet. A delicious wine with a wonderful potential, concentration and finish. A young wine that simply needs the right spot in your cellar with best drinking from 2026 through 2040. "

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2020 Vintage)
"The refined 2020 vintage is a single-vineyard, organically certified wine, hand-picked and matured for 18 months in French oak barrels (40 per cent new). It has dark, purple-flushed colour. Rich and youthful, it is fragrant and supple, with beautifully ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, and impressive depth, delicacy and finesse. Best drinking 2025+."

Stonecroft is a small, family owned winery making organic Gimblett Gravels wines in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The owners are Dermot McCollum and Andria Monin, who took the reins at Stonecroft in 2010 and converted to organic production. The owners are very hands on, managing the vineyards, winery and cellar door themselves.

Stonecroft seeks to express, through their wines, the unique character of their vineyards and each vintage. They seek to make wines which are intense, elegant and fruit-driven, but capable of significant bottle development. The ability of Stonecroft wines to improve in bottle has been demonstrated over more than 30 years, with many of the early examples still drinking well. Their total production is very small; with around 2500 cases produced annually over a number of varieties. Both the vineyards and the winery are certified organic.

Stonecroft has two vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District. The vineyards are around 3km apart. One of the vineyards is on Mere Road, west of Hastings and the other is at the base of Roy’s Hill. In total, approximately 7 ha are planted with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Viognier. Both vineyards are hot and dry, with peak summer temperatures consistently between 35˚C and 40˚C. Soils (known as the Omahu Gravels) are very stony and free draining.

Stonecroft takes great care to ensure the grapes harvested from their vineyards are of a high quality. Pruning, picking and most of the canopy management is carried out by hand. Being organic, a lot of attention is paid to canopy management with de-budding, leaf picking and green harvesting. Yields are kept very low to ensure top quality fruit and good ripeness levels; typically around 2kg per vine.
