SPY VALLEY SINGLE VINEYARD MERLOT / MALBEC 2014 is available to buy in increments of 1
68% Merlot, 26% Malbec & 6% Syrah
We feature the outstanding white wines of Spy Valley on a semi-regular basis as they are simply great quality and packed with value but very rarely do we seriously look at their reds other than Pinot Noir. Whoever says you can't grow Merlot in Marlborough obviously have never tried this wine. OK, it is a blend with 26% Malbec and 6% Syrah but it is lovely and ripe and concentrated with plenty of richness and great supporting tannins. In terms of quality and value, it fits in perfectly with the other Spy Valley wines.
Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"This wine is produced from selected Merlot and Malbec vines in a small very stony block in our Marlborough vineyard. The stony soil reduces the vigour of the vines, resulting in very intensely flavoured berries. Fruit-driven with intense plum and berry flavours, soft tannins and spicy oak."
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
"The 2014 vintage is a full-coloured blend of Merlot and Malbec, matured for 18 months in French oak barrels (29 per cent new). Deeply coloured, with a fresh, plummy, spicy bouquet, it is mouthfilling and vibrantly fruity, with good density of ripe plum, berry and spice flavours, fine-grained tannins, and good aging potential."
4 Stars & 17.5/20 Raymond Chan, November 2016 (2014 Vintage)
"Dark, deep, black-red colour with purple hues, youthful in appearance. The nose is soft and gently full with ripe fruit aromas of dark plum and blackberry fruit harmoniously melded with hints of spice, fruitcake and earth. Medium-full bodied, this has a fulsome palate with a softly concentrated core, packed with ripe fruit flavours of dark-red plums and blackberries. Entwined with spice notes, dark herbs, a hint of chocolate and earth. The fruit is framed by fine, grainy tannin extraction, and soft acidity enhances the fruit richness and depth. The wine carries with good drive to a soft, dry-textured, lingering finish of black plums and berry fruit, spices and earth. This is a well-structured, grainy Merlot and Malbec blend with ripe plum and black berried fruits, spices and earth notes. Match with roasted lamb and beef dishes, and with casseroles over the next 4-5 years. A blend of 68% Merlot 26% Malbec and 6% Syrah from the ‘Johnson Estate’ ‘G’ and ‘Lodge’ blocks, indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 29% new French oak barrels."
