A magic Barossa Shiraz with a huge complex presence - "nothing short of electrifying" in Halliday's words. Artisans Spinifex focus on the finesse and European styling, and such restraint is needed - at this extreme level of sheer fruit quality and concentration - for a smooth delivery of such sheer intensity. A feeling of receding depth rather than overt scale is expressed in mouth-filling, smoldering, unfolding dark fruit and savoury dimension. A towering wine from a legend of New Barossa, the La Maline is a deeply impressive food wine to decant soon or cellar.
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"With La Maline we are seeking a pure, finely structured expression of Barossa Shiraz. Key contributers in achieving this are vine age, site altitude, a soil sympathetic to the style and dedicated vineyard husbandry. Vineyard altitudes range from between 360 and 500 m asl, three Vineyards are in Eden Valley and one is in the Barossa Valley. Vine age averages around 75 years. Soils are poor, generally loamy sands sitting over varied parent material bases, all are unirrigated.
Vinification was kept relatively simple. All fruit was hand harvested and cooled overnight. Around 30-40% of bunches were retained and fermented as whole clusters, the balance were destemmed. Approximately 1% pressed Viognier marc was added during fermentation which were are undertaken in small open stainless steel and wooden fermenters with indigenous yeasts. Maceration times were generally between 12-20 days. Elevage on light lees was undertaken in a selection of thick staved 600L demi muids and barriques. Unfined and bottled without filtration."
97/100 James Halliday's Wine Companion (2015 Vintage)
"This is nothing short of electrifying. It's as if a ball of energy has been created with a core of tiptop dark fruit laced with pepper, menthol, star anise and patchouli. There are high tones to the floral notes, creaminess on the full-bodied palate, velvety tannins and integrated cedary oak. It has power, design and structure yet purity, too, and extraordinary length. It takes complexity to a new level."
94/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, August 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"In the past the wine has come from higher Barossa vineyards (and Eden Valley) with a ‘couple of buckets of white grapes tossed in’ (and indeed, there is a 1% addition of roussanne in this 2015 wine). It’s often felt like this is a little more old school Barossa shiraz, from Spinifex, but of course the veil of the lighter, defter touch from Pete Schell et al is still here. Gorgeous wine from 2015.
Purrs through the palate. Indeed, a kitten’s tongue lick of tannin is the motif through the palate, as is dark berry fruit, a touch of fennel-bay leaf and a comely wrap of espresso character. Lovely perfume of cuddly, black currant, dark plum, liquorice and cola with the faintest of clovey oak. All up, just delicious. But there’s also a finesse in its deep, long expression of Barossa shiraz. Drank the bottle (with friends!), eventually."
