From the Smail family's home block vineyard on the Moutere clay soils over looking the Kina Peninsula in the Nelson region. Son Sam (also winemaker at Whitehaven) makes the wines in a style that many consumers want but find hard to get. Drinking beautifully now with its creamy, golden fruits and great mouth-feel, making this very appealing for the summer.

"The 2014 vintage, estate-grown at Mariri, was matured for 10 months in seasoned French oak puncheons. Skilfully crafted, it is fragrant and finely poised, in a medium to full-bodied style with concentrated, vibrant, peachy flavours, showing good delicacy and length, balanced acidity and obvious cellaring potential."

"Hand-picked clone 95 fruit, WBP, the ferment finished in 1-3 y.o. French oak puncheons to 12.5% alc. and 2.5 g/L RS, the wine aged 10 months in barrel undergoing batonnage and MLF. Brilliant, even, straw-yellow colour with some depth and lemon-green hues on the rim. The nose is elegant and well-concentrated with a complex amalgam of ripe citrus fruit entwined with white and yellow stonefruits, creamy barrel-ferment elements, toasty oak, and nutty and flinty notes. The aromatics are fresh and detailed in complexity. Medium-bodied and elegantly proportioned, the flavours of ripe citrus and stonefruits are harmoniously interwoven with layers of creamy barrel-ferment, nuts and toasty oak. This has considerable nuance and complexing mealy interest. The palate is harmoniously balanced with light, lacy acid freshness and a very fine-textured line. The wine carries to a long, dry, nutty and toasty finish. This is an elegant, creamy, harmoniously integrated and complex layered Chardonnay with citrus, nutty and toasty flavours. Serve with roasted poultry, pork and veal over the next 4+ years."
