Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The Riflemans Vineyard is set on a beautiful, elevated river terrace. Our grapes have always thrived there – and, in the early days, so did the birds. With no other food source for some distance they gorged daily on our precious fruit. We responded with equal fervour, brandishing shotguns while riding the quads or walking the block. When we’d successfully harvested and pressed to barrel, we chalked up ‘Shotgun Chardonnay’ on the barrelheads. When it came to bottling we decided on a more positive spin and called the wine Riflemans – the name of a little known native bird, whose Maori name, Titipounamu, means Little Greenstone.

Intriguing, lifted aromas of ripe mandarin peel, nectarine, hazelnut and vanilla bean with nuances of nutmeg and lemon meringue. The palate is extremely intense with a seamless flow of sweet citrus notes and baked apple.  Finely knit and very classical with sensational length – the hallmark of this iconic vineyard."
5 Stars & 97/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2016 Vintage)
"Impressively pure and powerful chardonnay with salty, mineral, grapefruit, citrus, bran biscuit and cashew nut flavours. A very classy wine that’s complex and linear. Layered flavours are supported by tangy acidity that helps drive a lingering finish. Will age well."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Sacred Hill's flagship Chardonnay is one of New Zealand's greatest – powerful yet elegant, with striking intensity and outstanding cellaring potential. Grown in the cool, inland, elevated (100 metres above sea level) Riflemans Terraces Vineyard in the Dartmoor Valley of Hawke's Bay, it is hand-picked from mature, own-rooted, Mendoza-clone vines and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques (new and one year old), with some malolactic fermentation. The 2016 vintage is bright, light lemon/green. An elegant, mouthfilling wine, it has concentrated, vibrant grapefruit and peach flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, and lovely freshness, delicacy, poise and complexity. Already delicious, it's a tight-knit wine with obvious potential; best drinking 2019+."
5 Stars & 97/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"This is exceptional. Elegant yet powerful, the wine is impeccably composed showing white nectarine, lemon peel, vanilla, cedar and brioche aromas on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate that is focused and expansive at the same time. The wine offers layers of fine texture and pristine fruit flavours, beautifully complemented by stylish oak infusion and seamlessly integrated acidity. One for the long haul, this is a spectacular chardonnay in the making. At its best: 2019 to 2026."
5 Stars & 19.5/20 Raymond Chan, July 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Bright, pale golden-hued yellow colour with lemon-green tints. The nose is very elegant in presentation with a rich and concentrated core of ripe yellow stonefruits and aromatic citrus fruit, unfolding mealy and nutty detail, interwoven harmoniously with spicy and toasty oak nuances. This has great finesse and intensity, building in penetration with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate has elegant, but penetrating and intensely concentrated flavours of citrus and yellow stonefruits melded harmoniously with layers of creamy barrel-ferment and nutty, toasty oak, the flavours discreetly mouthfilling. The mouthfeel fresh and taut with the concentrated, near exotic fruit the feature, and the palate is enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity, with underlying power and drive. The wine carries to a very long and sustained, concentrated finish of poise and finesse. This is a beautifully refined and poised Chardonnay with great concentration of fruit and layers of fine oak on an intense and vibrant palate with great length. This is superb. Match with seafood, poultry and pork over the next 5-6 years. First made in 1995. Hand-picked Mendoza clone fruit, own rooted and 26 y.o., from the ‘Riflemans’ vineyard, Dartmoor Valley, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 80% new French oak barriques, undergoing 100% MLF. 707 dozen made."
4 1/2 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, November 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"The thing that I love about Riflemans chardonnay is that it doesn't’t follow any model, any recipe.  It’s simply the absolute best example that Sacred Hill can possibly produce, from the fruit sourced from the tiny, heritage, own-rooted Mendoza block high up on the chalky terraces of the Dartmoor Valley.  Clean, precise grapefruit pith layers alongside almond meal, tangelo zest and a long, creamy, cinnamon-dusted finish makes this a more delicate style than recent vintages, but I’m sure it will become one of the greats. The 2016 has a huge future ahead of it."
