83% Merlot, 8% Malbec, 5% Syrah, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon & 1% Cabernet Franc
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
"Merlot-based, this is a typically outstanding Hawke's Bay red from the Gimblett Gravels (principally the company's joint-venture Deerstalkers Vineyard). The wine spends its first year in mostly new French oak barriques, then another several months in new and older barrels. The 2014 vintage, oak-aged for 16 months, is Merlot-dominant (83 per cent), with smaller portions of Malbec (8 per cent), Syrah (5 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (3 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (1 per cent). Boldly coloured, it is very generous, with rich, ripe plum and blackcurrant flavours, a hint of dark chocolate, good complexity, and the underlying structure to mature well. Still youthful, it's well worth cellaring to 2020+."
95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2014 Vintage)
"Merlot-dominant blend with malbec, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Big, rich and almost chewy red with the malbec component giving an earthy richness to the wine. Intense and potentially complex red that can be appreciated now but will get better with bottle age. Drink 2016 - 2024."
96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2014 Vintage)
"From an outstanding vintage, this glorious merlot (83%) blend shows wonderful aromas of black/blueberry, game, cedar and clove with nuances of floral and cocoa. The palate is superbly weighted and rounded, and delivers awesome fruit power backed by loads of supple tannins. A youthful wine offering huge appeal already. From the Gimblett Gravels district. At its best: 2018 to 2028."
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, August 2016 (2014 Vintage)
"Very full, near impenetrable, purple-hued black-red colour. The nose is finely presented and softly concentrated with aromatic black plum fruit along with blackberries, blackcurrants, spices and fragrant redcurrant notes, unfolding dark red floral elements. The aromatics are expressed with restraint and harmony, unfolding iron-earth hints and lifted oak. Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours of savoury black and dark-red plums, blackberries and blackcurrants show with richness. The fruit is enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity and gently supported by fine-grained, powdery tannin structure. As the wine flows, the fruit sweetness grows, and the palate reveals iron-earth, minerals and oak as it carries to a long, lingering, dry-textured finish. This is a full, softly rich Merlot-based wine with black plum and berry fruit, iron-earth nuances and a firm, fine-grained palate. Serve with lamb, beef, venison and casseroles over the next 8-10 years. A blend of 83% Merlot, 8% Malbec, 5% Syrah, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc from the Gimblett Gravels, indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 8 months then the components blended and given a further 12 months in French oak, of which 33% were new."
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2014 Vintage)
"Fully loaded bouquet of wild and fresh red berries, dark plum and blackberry; some dried herb and soft pepper notes, a little bell pepper and vanilla scented toasty oak; quite complex overall. On the palate - dry, savoury, firm, youthful, full and rich in flavour; dark berry fruits and a light tart red fruit layer, plenty of acidity and firm tannins; the light bell-pepper and hay layer re-emerges; tense, youthful and lengthy finish. A wine to decant or for the cellar; will reward through 2025."
Sue Courtney, wineoftheweek.com (2014 Vintage)
"Bright red black with a shiny appearance. The bouquet is plums, raspberries and blackberries with winey oak / cedar, and ripe fruit fills the palate. A sumptuous wine that seems so balanced and smooth even though the tannins are firm and grippy and become quite assertive on the finish with the cedary, savoury oak quite noticeable too. All the while it’s layered with dark chocolate, tobacco, cigar box and hints of mint with wonderful extract and complexity and the fruit so ripe and concentrated as the flavours linger. A blend of 83% Merlot, 8% Malbec, 5% Syrah, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc aged in French oak (33% new)."
