Even among the breathtakingly beautiful and historically rich terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, Quinta do Crasto is special. The estate celebrated its 400th birthday in 2015, and a demarcation stone marks its inclusion in the first geographical classification of the region’s vineyards in the 18th century. For more than a century now, the Roquette family have owned the 130-hectare estate, 70 hectares of it planted to the traditional vines of the Douro Valley, clinging precariously to their schistous perch above the river. When you want to create new vineyards here, you often need to use dynamite – as the Roquettes discovered when establishing their new vineyard at Quinta da Cabreira high in the Douro Superior. Crasto was among the pioneers of table wine in the Douro, devoting much time and resource to unfortified winemaking when most of its neighbours remained 100% focused on Port. The red wines are among the best-regarded in Portugal, including a quartet of single varietal and single vineyard bottlings whose scarcity makes them much sought-after when they hit the market.
Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"Intense and deep on the nose, with fresh notes of wild berry fruit, elegant aromas of violets and delicate hints of cocoa. Balanced beginning, leading to a wine with great volume and a tight-knit structure made of round and silky tannins. Everything is in perfect harmony with fresh retronasal aromas of berry fruit. Balanced and lingering finish."
92/100 Wine Enthusiast (2014 Vintage)
"This wine has fine tannins, rich black fruits and a dry core. It is produced by the Roquette family, who owns this spectacular estate high above the Douro. A solid, structured wine, it's packed with tannins and fruit, finishing with acidity."
90/100 Mark Squires, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate (2014 Vintage)
"The 2014 Tinto Crasto Superior is a blend of 50% Touriga Nacional, 20% Tinta Roriz, 25% Touriga Franca and 5% Sousão, aged for 12 months in French oak (one-third new, the rest used). This is lovely in this vintage, one that was often difficult, but mostly better in Douro Superior. This is a bit on the elegant side for the Superior, but it has caressing texture, bright flavor and a reasonable finish. It drank beautifully after being open for a few hours. There is just enough structure so that it finishes with a bit of tension and grip, even after some aeration. To be sure, it is surprisingly accessible just now and I question whether it will reward extended cellaring. At the moment and for the next several years, though, it should be in a perfect place. The price is fair, too. This has become one of the better value-to-quality points in Crasto's lineup."
