Yalumba The Octavius has established a reputation as one of Australia’s icon Shiraz wines, an amazing feat considering the first release was the 1990 vintage.

Sourced 63% from Eden Valley and 37% from Barossa Valley fruit with an average vine age of 71 years, the Octavius is one of Australia’s iconic Shiraz. The style has evolved – no longer is ‘oaktavius’ appropriate. Whilst the small oak ‘octaves’ are used for fermentation, there is much less American oak along with the realization that the fruit neeeds to be of the quality and concentration to absorb the oak. This is everything you’d expect from top quality Barossa Shiraz (without the exhorbatant price tag). Whilst not cheap, in context this represents great value. There is complexity plus; with layers of flavours – tick, balance – tick, concentration – tick, deliciousness – tick.

Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
“Signifying Yalumba’s commitment to Barossa Shiraz, this is a truly individual wine, handcrafted, handmade and matured in fine French oak and Yalumba coopered American octave barrels. These unique barrels, which offered inspiration for the wine’s name, are just one of the many harmonious components in the symphony that is Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz.

A medium to full bodied brooding wine, that truly reflects the intriguing 2014 vintage. It exhibits savoury notes of red currants followed by dried herb aromatics, leading into almost sweet and sour plums. The palate depth is all Barossa Valley, with a dark bitter chocolate roundness and medium to full depth of ironstone tannins through to the finish. Double decant and enjoy alongside a beef or mushroom wellington with roasted root vegetables.”

Reviews for the 2013 Vintage below…

5 Stars & 19.5-/20 Raymond Chan, August 2017 (2013 Vintage)
“Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, near impenetrable, with youthful purple tints. The nose is very elegant and fine in expression, still tightly bound, providing finesse, but clearly brooding with the power and intensity to be revealed. At present, this shows a beautiful aromatic purity, with sweetly ripe blackberry fruits, liquorice, spicy oak and rich plums. This exudes remarkable finesse. On palate, this has great intensity of tightly bound and refined fruit flavours of blackberries, pepper, plums and liquorice with an array of spices and exotic oak. The extraction is very fine-grained and powdery in texture, but allows the sweetness and finesse to prevail. The wine carries to a very long and sustained, lush and exotic oaked finish. This will age well for two decades. Fruit 53% from the Eden Valley and 47% from the Barossa Valley, vine 84 y.o. on average, fermented to 14.0% alc. and aged 20 months in 42% new French and American octaves.”

93/100 Anthony Gismondi (2013 Vintage)
“In 2013 The Octavius is a 53/47 mix of cooler Eden Valley shiraz and warmer Barossa Valley fruit, now just under 85 years of vine age. Winemaker Kevin Glastonbury suggests that the Eden Valley shiraz brings aromatics and structure while the Barossa Valley fruit is typically all about richness, density and concentration.

A good, if not great year sets the scene for the latest Octavius. The aromatics show off its Eden Valley heritage, with fresh floral berry fruits and sweet dark cherries. The palate depth showcases the Barossa Valley, with dark, brooding chocolate, dark plum roundness and great concentration. The cool freshness of Eden Valley develops with the supporting acid and grainy tannin giving the wine structure for long term cellaring. The Octavius is all old vines with a big brooding nose of black cherry jam mixed with chocolate/coffee licorice with smoky, vanilla, floral. The attack is rich and smooth with savoury, licorice, black pepper, black cherry meaty notes flecked with orange peel, chocolate and plums.

A more elegant version than in 2012, showing balance and length over alcohol. A lovely complex mix of fruit and tannin. No rush; this will cellar well through 2020 and beyond. If you decide to open a bottle think lamb shanks. The Octavius is aged 20 months in 42 percent new French and American octaves plus one-year-old and older French barriques and hogsheads.”
