Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2023

The name ‘Cigar’ is derived from the unique cigar like shape of Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa strip from where this comes. Mainly from the famous Menzies vineyard along with for the first time fruit from a new recently purchased vineyard block. Maybe it is the inclusion of this fruit, the vintage, but what ever, this is a tremendous buy. Dark ripe Cabernet fruit with choco-cassis, smoke/earthy characters and plush and firm on the palate.

Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"The Cigar Cabernet Sauvignon is named after the unique cigar-shaped strip of rich terra rossa soil that defines the famous Coonawarra wine region. It is a contemporary medium to full bodied wine with rich fruit characters and soft round tannins, making it one of our most popular fine wines.

Our Menzies Estate Vineyard lies in the heart of Coonawarra on the famous terra rossa soil over limestone. This valuable patch of land is the holy grail of all Cabernet purists; with soil vivid red in colour, it is perfect for growing exceptional full-bodied red wines.

The deep magenta colour shows vibrancy and hints of the rich, expressive wine to come. The aromatics are opulent, with a perfume of violets, dark soy, hints of spice and the warm, comforting mélange of black fruits. The palate is eloquent with blackcurrants, red plums and clove spice melding with dark chocolate. The wine has a beautiful structure with fine tannins, balanced acidity and a lingering finish."

Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2023 (2019 Vintage)
"A complex and enticing bouquet of ripe fruits and toasty wood, a mineral laden earthy quality and completeness that can only come from site and excellent winemaking. A decisive concentration on the nose of dark berries and baking spices, roasted clay earth and violets. This leads to further aromas then flavours on the palate of blackberry and roasted plums, dark chocolate and flavours of toasty barrel. Full-bodied, taut, firm textures, dry and with a back bone of acidity. Delicious, new, taut and lengthy, a wine that punches well above its weight. A wine for drinking now with the right food or continue to cellar till 2027 then drink through 2039."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2023 (2019 Vintage)
"The irresistible bouquet shows cassis, tobacco, spicy oak and violet aromas, wonderfully complemented by firmly structured palate that's defined by layers of chalky tannins. The wine has excellent fruit concentration with gorgeous complexity, finishing impressively long and refined. At its best: now to 2034."

5 Stars & 18.5+/20 (94) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Review, March 2023 (2019 Vintage)
"Full, deep ruby-red, even colour throughout. The nose is full and vibrant, with aromas of red currant, cassis and raspberry, alongside cedar, tobacco, minerals, fresh spices and vine leaf. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with cassis, blackberry and plum, enriched by cedar, tobacco, clove and nutmeg spices, unfolding dark minerals and a hint of herbaceousness. The wine is mouth-filling and rich with spice and fine-grained tannins, providing a well-structured framework. Balanced acidity drives a lengthy, complex finish. This classic Cabernet Sauvignon shows a bold structure with a strong fruit core and a complex range of flavours. Match with ribeye steak and wagyu short ribs over the next 12+ years. Fruit from Menzies Vineyard, fermented to 14% alc, Aged for 16 months in new French oak barriques (32%), one-year-old French oak barriques and hogsheads (8%), the balance in older French oak. Vegan friendly."
