Winery notes (2013 Vintage)
"We are very proud to present the first vintage of ‘Ngakirikiri’ (the gravels). From the ‘once in a lifetime’ Hawkes Bay vintage of 2013, this flagship wine represents the pinnacle of our winemaking achievements and marks a milestone in Villa Maria’s 53 years of history. This exclusive, age worthy red wine featuring Bordeaux varietals (in 2013 predominantly Cabernet-Sauvignon), sets a new benchmark for quality and will be positioned at the top of Villa Maria’s portfolio, only to be bottled when exceptional vintages produce truly outstanding wines for consideration.
Ngakirikiri is the Māori word for Gravels, a befitting name for this stony Hawkes Bay vineyard sited on what was an ancient riverbed. The Gimblett Gravels sub-region is a majestic site with a reputation for astonishing, beautiful and thought provoking wines. 2013 in Hawkes Bay will go down as one of the regions greatest red wine vintages.
Upon pouring, this deep ruby coloured wine yields notably intense and pure aromatics of cassis, red and black plum and floral violet scents, with fresh ground coffee bean, fragrant dried thyme and cedar spice nuances also vying for attention. Layers of concentrated flavours emerge and flow beautifully across the palate from start to finish, with optimally ripe fruit, fine-grained tannins and supportive oak enhancing overall texture and richness at each point along the way. This full bodied and age worthy wine will benefit and gain additional complexity from careful cellaring over the next 15-20 years."
100/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2015 (2013 Vintage)
"Is this perfection? No, it is better than that, if that is possible. The wine is perfectly formed and composed, and is very proper, but it offers more. Exceptional concentration, brilliant structure, impressive fruit purity and layers of delicious flavours with seamless mouthfeel make this stunning wine thought-provoking and sensually awe-inspiring. This predominantly cabernet sauvignon from their Ngakirikiri vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels district exhibits cassis, plum, floral and cedar characters with subtle cigar box, vanilla and game complexity. Powerful and graceful at the same time with plenty of fine, chalky tannins. At its best: 2020 to 2038."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2013 Vintage)
"The debut 2013 vintage is promoted as the company's 'icon' Bordeaux-style red. From vines planted in the Gimblett Gravels between 1998 and 2000, it is Cabernet Sauvignon-based (97 per cent), with a splash of Merlot (3 per cent). Matured for 18 months in French oak barrels (52 per cent new), it is densely coloured, with substantial body (14 per cent alcohol) and bold, still extremely youthful, blackcurrant and plum-evoking flavours, showing lovely richness, purity and complexity. It should flourish for decades; open 2020 onwards."
5 Stars & 98/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, September 2015 (2013 Vintage)
"Ngakirikiri means “the gravels”. This is a new flagship label that in my view justifies its exalted price tag. It’s quite an extraordinary wine with dense berry, savoury/earth and spicy oak flavours. Long and linear it has power and structure but the tannins are surprisingly soft and pliable. The wine really opened up as it sat in the glass revealing interesting coffee, malt/peat and toasty characters together with a suggestion of violet. Definitely worth decanting. collectible and age worthy red."
19+/20 Geoff Kelly (2013 Vintage)
"Villa Maria have a sensational wine here, with a 50-year cellar life… It will score higher in 10 years time."
96/100 Greg Sherwood MW, Wine Safari SA (2013 Vintage)
"Although this wine is almost 5 years old, it still possesses a youthful deep plummy purple colour. A flagship red wine deserves to have an exulted, opulent, complex bouquet and this Gimblett Gravels blend does not disappoint. With 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and only 3% Merlot, the nose is lifted and elegantly perfumed with aromatic layers of intense cassis, black cherry, blueberries, damson plums and wonderful violet, dried rose petals and lavender perfume. The palate is dense and textured with opulent layers that are classically proportioned and seductive showing black cassis fruit concentration that would not look out of place on a young super premium Pauillac or St Julien Bordeaux. The supportive cedary oak is beautifully integrated and the tannins while youthful, are very fine grained lending just the right amount of Old World styled restraint. True to all great reds from New Zealand, this wine has super vibrant freshness that enhance and emphasise the majestic gravelly minerality and saline picante black liquorice finish. A truly impressive, sensually stimulating wine that deserves further ageing in the cellar for at least another 20+ years. But drinking this truly fine red now will equally bring great pleasure and enjoyment to consumers, collectors and connoisseurs alike."
