Gold Medal – Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2021
From two Awatere Valley vineyards, Villa Maria Reserve Pinot Gris is an off-dry, 'Alsatian' style with a plush opulence on the flavour-filled palate. Excellent stuff!
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Only Villa Maria wines of exceptional quality are awarded the designation 'Reserve'. Our philosophy and commitment to sustainability and quality is exemplified by the awards and accolades these wines achieve in wine judging around the world.
Predominantly sourced from our iconic Taylors Pass and Seddon Vineyards, this Pinot Gris is a rich, textural, opulent wine with a creamy palate from spending extended time ageing on yeast lees. The exotic tropical fruit flavours are framed by a soft, yet balanced acidity and unctuous texture."
5 Stars & Number 2 Cuisine Pinot Gris Tasting, February 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Bright red apple with baking spice and almond biscuit – imagine a freshly baked, sugar-dusted apple pie. A wine with lovely weight and texture on the palate. The primary fruit present is matched with fantastic acid which ensures this wine glides seamlessly along the length of the palate, which has an unexpected twist of spice on the finish making this wine all the more memorable."
Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, April 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"An enticing, fruity, varietal and detailed bouquet of Gris with aromas of fresh and baked pear, fresh and baked apple, fruit spices and a core of leesy complexity. Lots of weight, flavour and complexity on the palate with pears and quinces, apples and white peach. There’s an apple custard cream texture enhanced by the spices of fruit and natural white pepper note from the variety. Balanced, well made and ready. Best drinking upon purchase and through 2023+."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"Stylish and delectable at the same time, the wine shows apricot, Nashi pear, subtle spice and rich floral aromas on the nose. The palate delivers terrific fruit intensity combined with silky mouthfeel and refreshing acidity, leading to a lengthy expansive finish. At its best: now to 2025."
