Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2018
Selected for the 2020 Fine Wines of New Zealand List
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Located on the central valley floor of the Wairau Valley, the Fletcher Vineyard is characterised by free-draining alluvial soils. Pruned to balance the site naturally it exhibits low vigour where the fruit is encouraged to develop botrytis early. With careful late season management the fruit is harvested after the botrytis has drawn much of the berries’ moisture, concentrating sugars, acids and flavours.
Attractive Riesling aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle are accompanied by intense Noble Botrytis characters of apricot, mango and dried fruits. The palate is characteristically mouthfilling with a seductive orange blossom and sweet spice core balanced by a fine backbone of cleansing acidity. This wine exhibits superb concentration with great length and persistence of flavour."
17/20 Tim Jackson MW, JacisRobinson.com, July 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"Mostly Fletcher Vineyard, with some Ensor Vineyard fruit. Hand harvest. Inoculated with neutral yeast, for stainless-steel fermentation at cool temperatures, over two months. TA 9.6 g/l, pH 3.5, RS 230 g/l. Deep, burnished gold. Quince paste, curry tones and lime peel. Richly sweet but with lovely, balancing acidity. Quince paste, botrytis spice and old limes on the palate with some honey too. Long and lovely."
Reviews for the 2015 vintage below…
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"One of New Zealand's top sweet wines on the show circuit. It is typically stunningly perfumed, weighty and oily, with intense, very sweet honey/citrus flavours and a lush, long finish. The grapes are grown mainly in the Fletcher Vineyard, in the centre of Marlborough's Wairau Plains, where trees create a 'humidity crib' around the vines and sprinklers along the vines' fruit zone create ideal conditions for the spread of noble rot. The 2015 vintage, hand-harvested in mid-May, is a pale gold wine, light (10 per cent alcohol), peachy, sweet (240 grams/litre of residual sugar), oily-textured and long, with instant appeal."
5 Stars & 19.5+/20 (99) Raymond Chan, November 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"Brilliant, light golden yellow colour with some depth, a little paler edged. The nose is bold, rich and opulent with aromas of ripe tropical and citrus fruits with pineapple and apricots, marmalade, honey and nectar, along with a subtle musky layer. The varietal fruit gives way to the exoticism of botrytis. Very sweet to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is decadently luscious with opulent flavours of tangerine, marmalade, honey, apricot and musk flavours. This has a deep and packed, rounded core. The richness and unctuous mouthfeel are the feature, and the flavours mouthfilling. The wine is underlined by fine, ripe acidity that lends cut and brilliant tension, the freshness and vitality combining with the sweetness to carry to a very concentrated, long lingering finish. This is a wonderfully rich and opulent Noble Riesling with layers of exotic unctuousness and beautiful acid vitality and balance. This will develop greater complexity over the next 4-5+ years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Fletcher’ vineyard, Wairau Valley, sorted and fermented in stainless-steel to 10.0% alc. and 240 g/L RS, TA 9.0 g/L and pH 3.5, the wine aged 8 months on lees."

"Already golden in hue, this juicy, raisined beauty is creamy and lush, honeyed and spicy from the “noble rot”. Relatively light in alcohol, an intensely rich wine possibly too sweet for most desserts, so enjoy by itself, preferably only lightly chilled, or as a counterpoint to cheese or salty food."
