70% Cabernet Sauvignon & 30% Merlot

Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"The fruit for this wine was grown entirely on the gravelly soils of the Gimblett Gravels growing region in Hawkes Bay where the vineyards of Villa Maria have produced consistently high quality fruit for this Reserve blend for well over a decade . Our different vineyards contribute small parcels of exceptional fruit, each with their own unique characteristics. The free draining soils of these sites help ensure balanced fruit and canopy growth which is essential for ripe flavours and tannin development. Yields are cropped low allowing vines to produce fruit that is richly concentrated in colour, flavour and structure."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"The 2015 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70 per cent) and Merlot (30 per cent), matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (34 per cent new). Boldly coloured, it is still very youthful, with concentrated, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, seasoned with quality oak, impressive complexity and a finely textured, lasting finish. A very elegant, 'seamless' wine, it's best cellared to 2020+."

5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, September 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Very dark, deep, near-impenetrable black-hued ruby-red colour, very youthful in appearance. The nose is tight and elegant, very refined in expression, somewhat shy and brooding initially, but opens up in breadth and depth to show ripe and pure aromas of blackcurrants and blackberries, unfolding cassis and herbal notes with a touch of leafiness, unfolding black plums and mineral nuances. Medium-full bodied, the palate is beautifully proportioned with flavours of ripe blackcurrants and cassis, herbs and dark-red plums, unveiling a little pencilly oak. The tannins are very fine-grained and give the mouthfeel polish and style. The extraction is considerable, promising to open up with fruit richness to match the presence. Fresh acidity provides balance and vitality, carrying to a detailed, lingering finish. This is a tightly bound, beautifully refined and polished Cabernet/Merlot blend with blackcurrant, cassis and plummy fruit with body, grip and freshness. It will become richer over the next 10+ years. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, 70% from the ‘Twyford/Vidal’ sites and 30% from ‘Omahu Gravels’, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 35% new French oak."

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2015 Vintage)
"Opaque dark purple core with dark ruby hues and very pink rim. Aromas include smoked black berry and plum, herbs de Provence and bay leaf, sweet hay and some tobacco tones, cacao and violets. On the palate – very engaging with a core of dark berry fruits challenged by abundant, firm tannins and acidity, long and winding finish highlighting wood tones, smoky wood and baking spices and a lengthy complex finish. Decant for service. Best drinking from 2020 through 2035."
