Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Fruit from the Barrique Fermented blend come from across Gisbornes most prestigious vineyards. The Katoa and McDiarmid Hill sites are western edged vineyards beautifully positioned on north facing gentle hillside slopes. Taking full advantage of the sunlight, dry wind conditions and slightly cooler temperatures, the additional elevation provides the winemakers with a wonderful head start for producing this outstanding wine. In comparison the Ledger block, situated on clay-loam soils in the middle of the Patutahi area, is a relatively warm site ripening full flavoured fruit. Careful yield management and timely leaf plucking around the bunch zone in all blocks ensures that desired fruit ripening and quality can be achieved.

Styled to capture the regional essence of Gisborne, the Barrique offers a complex medley of fresh stone fruit aromas with hints of tropical fruits and smoky grilled nut characters. The palate is seamlessly textured with a creamy mid-palate, leading to a finish extended by harmonious acidity. This wine is well-integrated and appealing for enjoyment on release, but will continue to develop further complexity with maturation."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"This acclaimed wine is usually sourced principally from the company's Katoa and McDiarmid Hill vineyards. The 2016 vintage was mostly (94 per cent) grown and hand-picked at McDiarmid Hill, in the Patutahi district, fermented – mostly with indigenous yeasts – in French oak barriques (half new), oak-aged for 10 months, and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation. It's a powerful, weighty, lush wine, very generous, peachy, toasty and buttery, but also complex and finely structured. Already delicious, it should break into full stride 2019+."

5 Stars & Top 10, Cuisine Chardonnay Tasting, August 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"This delightful chardonnay from the practiced hands at Villa Maria has focus and tension. Great acidity and flinty energy lift the citrus pith, sweet spice, and nutty oak flavours, giving the wine drive and length. The fruit presence is generous. We suggest drinking it alongside a dish of seared tuna."
