Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2020
Gold Medal & 95/100 – New World Wine Awards 2020
The Villa Maria team keep delivering outstanding wines across their ranges. The previous vintage of this took out 3 Trophies including Champion Wine of the Show at the 2019 NZ Wine of the Year Awards and now this release has picked up Gold at the 2020 New Zealand International Wine Show. Dark, spicy and juicy; vibrant and supple. This is a very pleasurable wine and superbly priced at sub $20.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"Deep purple and crimson hues lead to a perfumed nose of violet, black fruit, herb and spice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, supple and silky in texture, featuring wonderfully integrated tannins. Pure fruit flavours lead the wine to a lengthy finish.
The fruit was picked and gently destemmed without crushing into open-top fermenters for fermentation with daily plunging to extract flavour, colour and tannin. Once pressed the wine was matured in 228L French oak barriques of which 18% were new, for 12 months prior to blending and bottling."
94/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, October 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"Bold, bright and beautifully built syrah with plum, berry, floral, violet, pepper and spice flavours. This deliciously juicy red can be enjoyed now or carefully cellared for a few years to yield a mellower texture and even greater complexity."
NWWA 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"If you were going to select wines based on quality and consistency, then this wine would have to be high on your list. It’s been awarded a Gold medal in this competition for its 2015, 2017 and now 2019 vintages. Made with grapes predominantly grown in the Gimblett Gravel region in the Hawke’s Bay, this wine has great weight and concentration with youthful fruit purity – plums, blueberry and a touch of black pepper. A very polished and complete wine."
