Aglianico del Vulture is a full-bodied red wine from the Basilicata region of southern Italy. As implied by the name, it is made from Aglianico grapes grown around Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano which dominates the skyline and landscape of northern Basilicata.
Valentino Sciotti (of Vesevo, Gran Sasso and other Farnese estates) took over this small co-operative in Basilicata in Acerenza in the heart of the Aglianico del Vulture zone in 2008. Consultant winemaker, Alberto Antonini, now works with talented young winemaker, Dennis Verdicchia, and together they superbly capture the true character of the grapes as well as the region.
Garnet red in colour. The nose has layered, highly complex aromas with hints of underbrush, violets and cocoa. Full-bodied, the wine has a sweet red fruit character with delicate oak nuances and persistent fruit notes through to the finish.
Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"The colour is an intense deep ruby while the bouquet is ample, with dominant notes of bitter cherry, candied fruit, aromatic herbs and distant hints of vanilla and thyme. The flavour has an exceptional, powerful and imperious personality, with warm elegant undertones of spices and cream. This is a wine with marked minerality and flavour, characteristics that give it extraordinary balance and drinkability."
