Gimblett Gravels 2017 Annual Vintage Selection

The inaugaural release of Soler, a new tier of wines in the Vidal collection, and it is a wine that impresses. Positioned between the superb value Vidal Reserve ($20) and the much lauded Legacy ($60), Soler has filled that gap with ease yet still scores very highly on the quality value ratio.

Winery noters (2017 Vintage)
"The 2016/2017 growing season has produced a Syrah exhibiting fragrant aromatics of rose, liquorice and background spice. The finely styled palate shows good richness with dark cherry, plum and savoury oak complexity. Elegantly balanced with supporting fine and chalky tannins, this wine will age gracefully for 5-8+ years from vintage."

98/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"A bouquet filled with aromas of violets, black currants, raspberry, peppery sweet meats, smoky oak and layers of garrigue, dry stone and baking spices. Complex and beguiling. Very expressive on the palate with flavours of oak and wood smoke, dark raspberry and black currant, loads of pepper and sweet black olive. Weighty yet fine, a strong back bone of acidity and firm youthful tannins, a core of fruit and ripeness with a long dry finish. This wine is delicious and should be in your cellar. Decant for service now and through 2022. Excellent drinking from 2022 through 2030 if stored well."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"The debut 2017 vintage is a classic cellaring style. Estate-grown at two sites in the Gimblett Gravels, it was matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (36 per cent new). Deeply coloured, with a fragrant, peppery bouquet, it is savoury, complex and well-structured, with concentrated, plummy, spicy, slightly earthy flavours, woven with fresh acidity, and good tannin backbone. Finely poised and youthful, with obvious potential, it should be at its best 2022+."

5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"The wine combines pristine fruit characters with spicy nuances, showing blackberry, cherry, cedar and dark spice aromas with a lovely accent of floral on the nose. It is beautifully weighted and expansive on the palate, offering outstanding fruit purity and rounded mouthfeel, leading to a persistent refined finish. At its best: now to 2025."
