100% Cabernet Sauvignon made in New Zealand is a rare commodity, but with examples like this and increasing warmer vintages forthcoming we are sure to see more. This is the first release 'Soler' from the Omahu Gravels vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels and is a wine to keep on your radar as this is destined to be a classic.
Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"This perfumed 100% Cabernet Sauvignon shows classic aromatics of blackcurrant, graphite and savoury oak. Dark fruit, integrated French oak and background dried herbs combine on a finely textured palate showing elegance and length of flavour. An age-worthy wine."
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"A bouquet that is slow to reveal its story. Aromas do emerge of blackened blackberry, dark plum and fresh cigar tobacco. Marmite and meat, a sweet toasted wood scent accentuated with aromas of clove and vanilla, then dried herb and baked bell-pepper. A complexity unfurls after many minutes in glass. Youthful, tense, firm and dry with flavours reflective of the nose. Abundant fruit and wood tannins with plenty of acidity. Complex, lengthy finish. A wine that should be in your cellar – will age and harmonise over the coming 3-5 years. Ideal drinking 2024 through 2034."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2017 Vintage)
"Powerful, elegant, high energy Cabernet Sauvignon with classic cedar/cigar box, fresh herb, black currant, pepper and spicy oak flavours. Youthful wine with a little fruit sweetness that's encased in taut, ripe tannins. Has great potential."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Offering fine value, the debut 2017 vintage was estate-grown in the Gimblett Gravels and matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (45 per cent new). Still very youthful, with dark, purple-flushed colour, it is mouthfilling and tightly structured, but not austere, with concentrated blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, and a welcoming fragrance. An elegant, rich, finely balanced red, it's well worth cellaring to 2022+."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Gorgeously fruited and classically expressed, the wine shows cassis, dark plum, olive and cedar characters with a touch of tobacco complexity on the nose. The palate is concentrated and brilliantly focused, delivering delectable fruit flavours together with elegant oak infusion, backed by chalky tannins. At its best: now to 2027."
