Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2020
Vidal reserve Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon has long been one of the top value Bordeaux styles to come out of Hawkes Bay. The 2018 crafted exclusively from Gimblett Gravels fruit and matured in barrel for 18 months continues this fine form. It offers excellent value at its usual price but at just $14.99 it takes that to the next level.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"This classic Hawkes Bay blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, reflects the 2018 vintage and our premium vineyard sites in the Gimblett Gravels. Expressive dark red fruits and spicy oak aromas lead into a palate showing depth, balance and length. Food Matches: Lamb, beef and hard cheeses."
90/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, September 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"Offering lovely complexity, the wine shows cassis, dark cherry, fennel and cedar characters on the nose. The attractively expressed medium-full-bodied palate is beautifully layered with silky texture and sweet berry flavours together with savoury undertones, finishing long and pleasingly dry. At its best: now to 2023."
Reviews for the 2017 vintage below…
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"A consistently good buy. Matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (20 per cent new), the 2017 vintage is a blend of Merlot (68 per cent) and Cabernet Sauvignon (32 per cent). Fragrant, full-coloured and fruit-packed, it has very good body and depth of vibrant, plummy, spicy flavours. An elegant, still-youthful red, it should be at its best from 2021 onwards."
