Gimblett Gravels Annual Vintage Selection 2016
This is a super concentrated Syrah that fills the palate whilst retaining good freshness and drive. Along with Syrah's dark fruit flavours there is also notes of olives, nuts, liquorice and dark spices. The tannins melt into the palate. A top, world class Syrah, that would made a great addition to any collectors cellar and is sure to be a show-stopping wine in a few years.
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"This enticingly fragrant Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District shows aromatics of violet, blueberry, herb garden, and underlying spice. The concentrated and refined palate of dark red berry and plum combine with savoury oak complexity. Elegantly balanced, and finely textured with chalky tannins this wine finishes long. Distinct and age-worthy."
5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2016 Vintage)
"Bright, vibrant, high energy syrah with taut violet, berry, pepper and spicy oak flavours. An elegant powerhouse that needs time to release its full potential thanks to a backbone of fine yet assertive tannins."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"The wine offers outstanding fruit purity; the seductive bouquet shows Black Doris plum, blueberry, violet and olive notes with a hint of black pepper complexity. It is mouthfilling and delectable on the palate, exhibiting layers of fine texture and fleshy mouthfeel, brilliantly enhanced by succulent fruit flavours and polished tannins. At its best: 2020 to 2030."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"The estate-grown 2016 vintage was hand-harvested from 18 year-old vines in the Omahu Gravels and Twyford Gravels vineyards, in the Gimblett Gravels, and matured for 20 months in French oak barriques (43 per cent new). Dark and purple-flushed, it is enticingly floral, with lifted plum and black pepper aromas. Concentrated and vibrantly fruity, it is richly varietal and smoothly textured, with fresh, concentrated plum, berry and pepper flavours, and a long, spicy finish. Best drinking 2021+."
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, February 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"Purple and ruby with a purple, crimson and pink rim. Distinctive, complex and youthful bouquet with quite urgent and competing aromas of raspberries and plums, blackcurrants and blue fruits. There’s also plenty of new(ish) oak scents with fresh toasty spices, but also a distinctive varietal peppery frame. Vibrant, textured, youthful and fruity core on the palate. Flavours do reflect the nose, firm tannins and higher acidity need time to settle in and when they do this wine will be incredible. A lengthy and complex and detailed wine with flavours that reflect the nose. Best from 2022 through 2032."
5 Stars & 19.5/20 (98) Raymond Chan, July 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Dark, deep, near impenetrable black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter edged. The nose full and broad with harmoniously concentrated and layered aromas showing ripe blackberries and black plums along with dark raspberries, liquorice and fragrant Asian spices, unfolding a little black pepper and iron-earth notes. The aromatics grow in depth and density with aeration, and is quite complete. Medium-full bodied, the palate has richly sweet, plush and juicy, vibrant and poised flavours of ripe blackberries and plums with notes of dark raspberries and liquorice, forming a tight and deeply packed core. Layers of exotic Asian spices, dark herbs, violet florals, pepper and iron-earth emerge. The fruit is supported by considerable fine-grained, powdery tannin extraction and structure with integrated acidity adding to the richness. The flavours carry to a very long, sustained, vibrant finish. This is a beautifully rich and lusciously vibrant Syrah with ripe and complex flavours of black fruits, spices, florals and earth on a well-structrured, fine-grained palate. Match with roasted game meat dishes over the next 7-10+ years. Waldron and MS clone fruit, 50% each from the ‘Omahu Gravels’ and ‘Twyford Gravels’ sites, vines 18 y.o., hand-picked and fully destemmed and fermented with a small portion of whole berries to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 20 months in 43% new French oak barriques. 350 dozen made."
93/100 Jamie Goode, December 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"From the Omahu Gravels and Twyford Gravels vineyards. 13% alcohol. 20 months in French oak, 14 barrels made. Concentrated and vivid with a spicy, grippy structure and notes of pepper, blackberry and black cherry. This is dense, structured and quite backward, and needs time. Tight and closed at the moment."
