Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"2014 was an outstanding Hawkes Bay vintage and joins 2013 as one of the truly great vintages of all time This enticingly fragrant Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district shows intense aromatics of dark rose, plum, herb garden and underlying spice. The rich and concentrated palate of dark cherry and plum combine with savoury oak complexity. Elegantly balanced, and finely textured with chalky tannins this wine finishes long. Distinct and ageworthy with the ability to age gracefully for 12+ years from vintage, in good cellar conditions."

"A wine of total seduction, the gloriously perfumed bouquet shows dark plum, blueberry, floral and game with nuances of cedar and black pepper. The palate is powerful and sumptuous, and delivers waves of delectable fruit flavours, enhanced by velvety texture and loads of supple tannins. Compelling and formidable, while remaining pure and true to its origin. From their Ohau Gravels and Twyford Gravels vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels district. At its best: 2018 to 2032."

5 Stars & 97/100 Bob Campbell MW (2014 Vintage)
"Dense and powerful Syrah with impressively rich flavours of chocolate, plum/dark berry, licorice, cracked black pepper and spicy oak. I rate it slightly ahead of the more structured and highly celebrated wine from the 2013 vintage and I believe it will cellar at least as well despite being more accessible now."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
"The outstanding 2014 vintage was estate-grown in the Omahu Gravels and Twyford Gravels vineyards, and matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (38 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is concentrated and silky-textured, with vibrant, densely packed, well-ripened plum and spice flavours, finely integrated oak and supple tannins. A highly refined wine, it's already approachable, but should blossom with long-term cellaring. Best drinking 2020+."

5 Stars & 19.5+/20 (99) Raymond Chan, August 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Very dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is full and voluminous with firmly concentrated and deep aromas of ripe blackberry fruit melded with iron-earth and black mineral notes. Black and violet florals unfold, with spice and liquorice elements, black plums and a suggestion of funky reductive mineral complexity. Full-bodied and powerfully presented on the palate, this is solidly concentrated, near-sturdy, but retaining style. The fruit is particularly dense and concentrated, lending remarkable body, weight and presence. The flavours of well-ripened black berried fruits, iron-earth, plums and liquorice are complexed by spice nuances, and show with richness, succulence and lusciousness. The fruit sweetness is balanced by very fine-grained, powdery tannins with considerable extract. The palate caries to a very long, lingering finish. This is a wine for the next 12-15 years. 100% Syrah, 67% from the ‘Omahu Gravels’ and 33% from the ‘Twyford Gravels’ vineyards, fully destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 32 days on skins and aged 18 months in 38% new French oak barriques. 500 cases made."

94/100 Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, August 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"It’s a sinewy, peppery, herb-flecked wine – there’s ripeness here, and fruit, but essentially no sweetness – with both composure and medium-term cellar ability written all over it. It’s hard to find a hair out of place here. Black cherry, kirsch, creamy/nutty oak and all those assorted savoury/herb/spice characters. Tannin casts a stern eye over it all. It will mature very well."
