80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot & 9% Malbec
Twice a year we get offered a 'deal' on the Vasse Felix Filius wines and it's that time now. Over the past 4-5 years this label has built quite a following, especially when it is on this 'Deal Pricing. Strangely it seems that NZ is the only market where this pricing is offered. We are not complaining! This deal is easily one of the best we see out of Australia, definitely the best from Western Australia and is absolutely unbelievable buying from one of Margaret River's premier and original producers, Vasse Felix.
For those of you who have followed this wine over the past few years will find the 2017 sporting an updated label. It is still ripe and generous but with a touch more structure owing to slightly more Cabernet in the blend which consists of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot & 9% Malbec. This excellent Cabernet Merlot blend has fantastic concentration of blackcurrant fruit backed up with cedary oak and fine tannins – a style of elegance and finesse rather than power. Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"‘Son of’ the Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon. This regional blend incorporates more opulent fruit from each of the Vasse Felix Vineyards. Generous portions of Merlot contribute to a succulent wine with approachable tannins.
Fragrant Australian dry forest aromas are complemented by notes of gravelly earth, redcurrant, satsuma plum, liquorice, black olive skin, mocha and a subtle hint of toasted cedar. The palate is elegant and medium bodied, the wine displays a concentration of blackberry fruit at its core, enveloped by a twiggy, savoury tannin succulence. A touch of graphite hints at the pure Cabernet line, while softer red fruit accents – courtesy of the Malbec and Merlot – lighten and brighten the palate."
