Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"The Premier Cabernet Sauvignon of Vasse Felix. This wine’s distinctive style possesses all the hallmarks of the finest Margaret River Cabernet; elegance, generosity and ageability. Made every year since 1972, it is Margaret River’s archetypal Cabernet Sauvignon.

The nose shows immediately enticing bright forest fruits with deep blackberry. Hints of fresh baked bread crust, tomato and herb focaccia, earthy black truffle, iodine, ocean spray and granite stone that opens up to some cranberry and rose petal. The palate is juicy, intense, and luscious on entry with fast building super fine and powdery tannin. It is soft yet solid, elegantly taut, and super-luscious with concentrated fresh raspberry, vanilla pod and savoury nutmeg on the finish.

2020 was a stunning vintage that will define ‘rare and fine’ with low yields and fantastic quality. Spring development was early, followed by a warm start to summer which continued into fine, sunny and dry conditions throughout the season. Combined with low yields, this brought an early start to harvest. No early bird pressure with timely Marri Blossom and no disease pressure were ideal. The birds arrived after a rainfall event late February and we netted the reds, the conditions also cooled slightly extending the season for ideal tannin ripening and fruit flavour preservation."

5 Stars & 95/100 Huon Hooke, The Real Review (2020 Vintage)
"Good depth of red-purple colour and a fresh aroma which leads with leathery oak-derived notes. The tannins create a very drying impression on the palate. There is elegance and impressive intensity here, but also some toughness—that age will almost certainly soften. There is a core of dark fruit—blackberry and mulberry—that emerges the more you work the glass. This is a sleeper, and loaded with latent potential."

95/100 Ray Jordan, WinePilot.com (2020 Vintage)
"A stylish and elegant expression of this very good Margaret River vintage. The smaller volume and tight berry factor have contributed to the intensity and power on the palate especially. Highly perfumed nose with leafy red berry and blackcurrant and with a trace of bay leaf and black olive. The palate is silky smooth and more in the medium bodied zone. So bright and vibrant with a dry chalky tannin and fine oak support. A classy wine."

96/100 Erin Larkin, James Halliday's Wine Companion (2018 Vintage)
"Not enough can be said in favour of the 2018 vintage, producing wines just like this. Powerfully ripe and dense, with epic length of flavour. This is a structural and concentrated cabernet capable of decades of graceful evolution in the cellar. Wild raspberry, salted licorice, aniseed, pomegranate, ferrous and kelp. Saline acid. It comes in at under $50, and long may that continue, for it is one of the great-value premium wines of the region."

96/100 Ray Jordan, The West Australian (2018 Vintage)
"Oh, my. What a stunning wine, made more stunning when you can get it for less than $50. Deep and concentrated power delivered with integrated elegance and poise. This is classically structured cabernet, displaying all the power and purpose you get from this variety in a great year from Margaret River. Chalky tannins, powerhouse middle core with a great lingering finish. Deep, leafy, oyster shell, cabernet minerality. You simply must get some of this."

94+/100 Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, June 2021 (2018 Vintage)
"It’s a medium-weight wine and yet it’s unafraid of tannin. You have to love that. It’s not out of whack, it remains in balance, integration is established and then it launches from there. Lots of bay leaf and baking spice here but then blackcurrant, fresh and juicy, which pushes into redcurrant, mint and boysenberry. There’s an undergrowth-like note here too, almost earthen, which teams terrifically with the tannin. The cellar beckons."

94/100 James Suckling (2018 Vintage)
"This impressive cabernet has aromas of dark berries, as well as plums and blue fruit, alongside terra cotta and also fresh purple flowers. The palate has a seamless and flavour-soaked feel with fine tannins carrying black-fruit flavours. Some chocolate to close. Impressive."
