Another superb release from Two Rivers. Winemaker Dave Clouston reckons this is his best yet… a big claim but one we'd agree with and we even think this may prove to be one of the best of Marlborough 2021. This 2021 is a powerhouse of flavour that just explodes in the glass and then on the palate we just love the hint of oyster shell minerality that gives it a real edge. There is nothing shy or subtle but it is also very sophisticated with layers of complexity.
Two Rivers Sauvignon Blanc 2021 is a triumph!
Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Crops were significantly reduced due to early spring frosts and a cold, wet flowering period. Summer was incredibly dry and this lead to a very early harvest. The resulting fruit quality was outstanding and wines from the 2021 vintage might just be exceptional. Harvested early morning and lightly pressed, the juice was fermented cool, predominately in stainless steel to maximise fruit purity and distinctive varietal character. A small portion was fermented in concrete egg tank and clay amphora to add a grainy texture to the palate. The wine was then aged on light yeast lees for three months to gain complexity and increase mouthfeel.
Bright straw in colour, this classy sauvignon blanc has explosive aromatics of passionfruit, white peach, gooseberry and lime juice that mingle with subtle notes of caper berries and flint. Dry and saline, persistent flavours of white currant, golden kiwi fruit and stone fruit are revealed alongside bright, mouthwatering acidity. The distinctive palate has a gravelly texture and a ripe, pure finish."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2021 (2021 Vintage)
"This lives up to its billing as one of the finest sauvignons in the country. The intensely fragrant bouquet shows green rockmelon, kaffir lime, jalapeno and kiwifruit notes, leading to a powerfully concentrated palate displaying outstanding weight and persistency. Brilliantly expressed offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2030."
Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, July 2021 (2021 Vintage)
"Power and intensity with a core of pure, ripe white fleshed fruits, citrus and apple with a wet stone and fresh green herb complexity. Flavours of lemon flesh and apple, pineapple and fresh basil, grapefruit, pith and fruit spice. Refreshing, crisp, silky and salivating textures lead to a long finish. An excellent example that ticks all the boxes of an excellent vintage and faultless winemaking. Drinking best from purchase and through 2025+."

"Holy jalapeno Batman!! One thing’s for certain. The second someone pours a glass of this wine, you’ll be able to smell its crazy punchy pungency from across the room. Or possibly across the street. Who knows – soon you may be overrun by sauvignon blanc zombies clawing at your windows with an unstakeable desire to have what you’re having. With basil, sweet pea, capsicum and nettle-infused niceness on the nose, plus buckets of white peach and passionfruit saturating the palate, it’s delicious."
Reviews for the 2020 vintage below…
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2020 Vintage)
"The very lively, harmonious 2020 vintage was grown in the Awatere and Wairau valleys, and matured for three months on its yeast lees in a mix of stainless steel tanks (principally), concrete, egg-shaped vessels and clay amphorae. Bright, light lemon/green, it is highly aromatic, mouthfilling and vibrantly fruity, with penetrating tropical-fruit flavours, ripe and fresh, a herbal undercurrent, and a long, dry (3 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. Best drinking mid-2021+."
5 Stars & 19-/20 Candice Chow for Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, August 2020 (2020 Vintage)
"Bright, even, youthful pale yellow. The nose is vibrant with well-proportioned aromas of gooseberry, apple, kiwi, lime and zest, along with elderflower, slight flint and mineral. Light-bodied, gentle and bright flavour of Granny Smith's apple, lime and zest, kiwi fruit entwined with elderflower cordial, saline, oyster shells and prickly spices to a lengthy finish. The fruit is bright and fresh, crispy without being green or overly fruity. Smooth and clean textured with a roundness from the light lees ageing, complemented by a light chalky, oyster shells phenolic. Crisp, bright acidity flows with good energy and balance to a long finish. This is a crisp and pleasurable Sauvignon Blanc with a pure expression of green fruit, elderflower on a smooth-flowing, sea mineral texture line. Match with diamond clams and blue cod over the next 3-4 years. Fermented in a mixture of stainless steel, concrete egg and clay amphora to 13.5% alc, 3.2 g/l RS. Aged on lees for 3 months."

"Two Rivers recognises the importance of the Wairau and Awatere Rivers, which make up the spiritual heart of Marlborough’s wine region. New Zealand has great winemakers and great vineyard sites, and when you get the two of them together magic happens. This year’s Champion Sauvignon Blanc has aromas and flavours of red capsicums and nectarine with a captivating creamy texture. Crisp acidity and great concentration with weight follows through to a long finish."
