Dave Clouston's Two Rivers wines are on a roll at the moment. This Chardonnay has already been awarded four Gold medals. An impressive achievement to be noticed and accoladed by so many different sets of judges. And now it has taken out the Trophy for Champion Export Wine at the recent Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2019 although here's hoping not too much of it gets exported so we can have more for us! We rate it highly for its sense of power, flavour depth and down-right deliciousness.

Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"Clos des Pierres (place of stones). This wine was sourced from two Marlborough vineyards – The Spring in the Wairau Valley with 27 year old Mendoza vines and extremely stony soils, and our Brookby Hill Vineyard in the Southern Valleys with Clone15 and B95 vines. The fruit was hand harvested, lightly whole bunch pressed and wild fermented in barrel with intermittent stirring of the lees. Full malolactic fermentation occurred, followed by 11 months ageing in 25% new and seasoned French barrels. Unfined and unfiltered.

Bright yellow in colour, the bouquet offers aromas of lemon curd and orange blossom mingled with hazelnut and struck match. On the palate the wine is tightly knit, opening up to layers of tangelo, white peach, Tee Tree, Kaffir lime and sherbet, over toasted cashew and flinty flavours. The artisan winemaking approach has resulted in a racy and delicious wine, showing great vibrancy and underlying old vine minerality."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"It is instantly appealing on the nose showing ripe stone fruit, lemon peel, nougat, brioche and roasted hazelnut characters with a hint of flinty complexity. The palate is beautifully weighted and richly textured with fabulous fruit power backed by bright acidity, leading to a persistent creamy finish. Wonderfully complex and engaging. At its best: now to 2023."

5 Stars & 18.5/20 (93) Raymond Chan, October 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Bright, light golden-hued yellow colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is firmly-packed with deep and intense, well-concentrated aromas of yellow stonefruits, citrus fruit, and a core of creamy, nutty oak melded with complexing flinty detail unfolding savoury mineral elements. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly presented with taut and well-bound flavours of yellow stonefruits and citrus fruit entwined with mealy interest and nutty oak with nuances of flint. The palate has intensity and linear drive, with some underlying power, and the wine carries with fresh acid energy to an elegant, lingering finish. This is an intense and concentrated Chardonnay with stonefruit, citrus fruit, meal and nutty complexities and a hint of flint on a linear, well-driven palate. Match with grilled and roasted seafood, poultry and pork over the next 4 years. Hand-picked fruit from two sites, ‘The Spring’ in the Wairau Valley with 27 y.o. Mendoza, and ‘Brookby Hill, Southern Valleys with clones 15 and 95, WBP and fully barrel-fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 25% new French oak undergoing batonnage and full MLF. 1,100 cases made."

NZIWS 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Attractive scents of spring blossoms, citrus and lemon wood shavings and bright, complex and zingy tasting with lemon cream notes, hints of melon and harmonious nutty oak all the way through."

4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"From two sites, in the Wairau Valley and Southern Valleys, this wine was hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels (25 per cent new in 2017), given a full, softening malolactic fermentation, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2017 vintage is light lemon/green, fresh and youthful, with very good intensity of grapefruit and peach flavours, a minerally streak, biscuity notes adding complexity, fresh acidity, and good drive and potential. Best drinking 2020+."
