Trinity Hill The Gimblett is one of our favourite Hawkes Bay Bordeaux variety blends. This label always offers plenty, even more from the outstanding 2021 vintage, and we consider it to be incredible value. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon make up the majority of the blend this year and followers of the label will be well pleased as it has all the depth and richness we have come to expect. This will age beautifully so get some into your cellar today!

Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"A creative blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. Since 2005, “The Gimblett” has typically been a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec, in varying proportions, depending on the strengths of the vintage. Thanks to a favourable growing season, the 2021 release is made almost entirely from the Cabernet family, with a small amount of Petit Verdot adding further complexity and interest.

The beauty and perfume of Cabernet Franc is complimented by the sophistication and refinement of Cabernet Sauvignon, and the colour, spice and structure of Petit Verdot. A beautiful violet fragrance precedes complex aromas of brambly blackcurrants and blackberries, intermingled with hints of dried herbs, fresh cedar, anise, sweet spices, vanilla, and toast. There is excellent concentration and purity of flavour on the palate with a vibrant core of black fruit flavour wrapped in sheath of cedary, toasty oak. Fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity combine to produce a succulent, supple, and textural wine with the structure and capacity to develop further complexity over the next 10 years."

96/100 Judges Comments, Decanter World Wine Awards 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Mouthwatering notes of ripe raspberry, roasted plum and coffee with a savoury, herbaceous edge; firm and robust with a cleansing acidity and an impressively long finish."

Rated Excellent, 5 Stars & 93/100 NZ Wine Rater, August 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"Very impressive, deep, purple-black hue. Lifted, fragrant bouquet with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberries and boysenberry with notes of star anise, seaweed and cigar box, cedary oak. Youthful, plush with a powerful core of fruit, generous texture, good weight and layers of firm tannins promising a long life ahead."

5 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, October 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"The way that winemakers Warren Gibson and Damien Fischer have evolved this blend over the last decade or so has been super-exciting to see, particularly as the proportion of cabernet franc is now sitting at 50%. The remainder of the blend consists of cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot and it’s a very pretty wine indeed. Erupting with dried herbs, blueberry, concentrated pepper and leather layers, then unfurling hints of dark berries, freshly turned earth alongside meaty, muscular tannins, the mouthfeel is warming, woolly, soaked in soy and black olive and finishes with a suede-like consistency."

4 ½ Stars & Top 10, Cuisine NZ & International Bordeaux Varieties Tasting, June 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"An energetic and youthful wine with high- toned cassis and dark fruit, and tomato-leaf aromas on the nose. The palate is juicy and focussed by the steely thread of acid that runs throughout with young generous tannin and a long satisfying finish."

Reviews for the 2020 vintage below…

Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"A powerful bouquet with ripe varietal fruit scents then layers of oak and mineral earth qualities. Blackberry and iron, dark cherry flesh, plum and black olive, wood smoke and dark spices from toasty barrel. Equally powerful on the palate with flavours of dark skinned berry fruit, clove and dusty vanilla spice layers. An abundance of firm tannins from fruit then wood combine with a back bone of acidity forming a strong foundation. Excellent weight, concentration, lengthy and mouthfeel, delicious! Best drinking from 2024 through 2034+."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2020 Vintage)
"The very elegant 2020 vintage is a Hawke's Bay blend of Cabernet Franc (50 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (33 per cent) and Merlot (17 per cent), hand-picked and French oak-matured. Deeply coloured, it is fragrant and supple, with mouthfilling body and concentrated, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, gently seasoned with nutty oak. A finely textured red, already delicious, it should break into full stride 2025+."
