Gold Medal – Hawkes Bay A&P Wine Awards 2018

98% Syrah & 2% Viognier

We are seeing the emergence of more sophisticated styles of Hawkes Bay Syrah and the recent successes internationally of these wines reinforces just how good they are. The wine-making has moved to be more akin to Pinot Noir than Cabernet-like. Gentle extraction and around 20-30% whole bunch fermentation is just one example resulting in more finesse and greater complexity and concentration. This is a darkly coloured package of dense, sweet black fruits, spice/cloves, plump yet good back palate mouthfeel.

Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The 2016 Syrah has a deep and youthful vibrant crimson colour. Wild raspberry, blueberry, cracked pepper and hints of vanilla bean show on the nose. Powerful and balanced ripe tannins give the wine great savoury structure. Oak plays a supporting role with the wine living on a pure fruit expression. This purity combined with refreshing natural acidity mean there is excellent potential for aging. Development of mineral, gamey characters will result from bottle-age. Great with red meat dishes but especially good with game, particularly with duck and venison. Drink 2017 to 2027."

5 Stars & Number 2 Cuisine Syrah Tasting, June 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"This syrah from one of Hawke’s Bay’s premium producers of the variety is both serious and uplifting. A sprinkle of pepper, still dark fruit, attractive cedary oak, a whisper of florality (there is a 2% viognier presence)… all this comes packaged in a fantastic structure built around broad, round tannins. It has weight, but steps delicately."

5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, November 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Fabulously styled as always, the latest offering of this reliable label is another beauty. Fragrant aromas of dark plum, blueberry compote, violet, almond and pepper spice lead to a succulent palate that is silky and rounded, and offers excellent fruit purity and a lingering smooth finish. Tannins are fine and in perfect balance, making the wine immensely appealing and approachable. At its best: now to 2022."

5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, November 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Very dark, deep purple-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim, very youthful in appearance. The nose is softly full and voluminous with well-packed aromas of ripe dark raspberry fruit with blackberries, black and white pepper, dark-red and violet floral fragrances and nuances of dark herbs. Medium-bodied, the palate has elegantly concentrated flavours of ripe blackberry and dark raspberries with a layering of pepper, lifted florals, dark herbs and spices. The fruit is supported by fine tannin extraction, lending powdery textures and grip The acidity is integrated and the mouthfeel is sweet and mouthfilling. The wine carries to a soft, lingering finish of dark-red fruits, pepper and spice. This is an elegantly concentrated Syrah with mouthfilling flavours of black and red fruits, pepper, florals and herbs on a fine-textured palate. Match with lamb, beef and venison, and Middle Eastern fare over the next 4-5 years. 98% Syrah, the fruit hand-picked from estate Gimblett Gravels vineyards fermented with 25% whole bunches and 2% Viognier co-fermented, to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 14 months new and seasoned French oak barriques and 5,000 L oak ovals."

93/100 James Suckling, November 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Attractive florals and red berry fruits swathed in pepper and woody spices, as well as a nicely fitted spicy oak thread. The palate has a forthright, succulent and focused feel with plenty of blackberry and redder fruit flavours that twist neat and tight through the finish. Latent power here."
