Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay, often referred to as the Black Label, is consistently one of the very best to come out of Hawkes Bay yet the pricing has stayed surprisingly reasonable.  


Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Hand-harvested fruit was gently pressed and fermented with indigenous yeast in French oak 500 litre puncheons. The wild yeast ferments help add complexity and texture. Malo-lactic fermentation was encouraged to soften acidity and give further richness. The wine received 11 months barrel aging then a further 4 months in tank on lees.

Fruit flavours are in the cool to moderate spectrum of citrus, white flowers, ripe grapefruit and melon. The style is mid-weight with elegant oak nicely tucked in, providing texture and lingering flavours of cashew, roasted almond and gun flint.

The structure has a tight shape with the finesse and concentration that are hallmarks of Trinity Hill Chardonnay. It displays delicacy but richness and the beautifully linear acidity makes it a fantastic match with food. An excellent partner with white meats and seafood dishes. Drink to 2024."

"Bright, even yellow colour with lemon-gold hues, a little paler on the rim. The nose is fresh and elegant with openly accessible aromatic volume, showing white and yellow stonefruits complexed by a harmonious layering of gunflint and minerals, along with nutty oak and subtle creamy barrel-ferment nuances, revealing toasty oak hints. The aromatics build in intensity and concentration with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate ha bright and refreshing flavours of white and yellow stonefruits, and citrus fruits entwined with creamy and nutty oak, and complexing notes of gunflint and minerals. The flavours form a tight core, and the mouthfeel is enlivened by lacy acidity, the wine flowing along a fine-textured line, leading to a crisp, lingering finish of stonefruits, citrus fruit and minerals. This is a bright, lively and refreshing Chardonnay with intense and concentrated, complex flavours of stonefruits, citrus fruits, nutty oak and minerals, on a fine-textured palate. Match with roasted seafood, poultry and pork dishes over the next 4-5+ years. Hand-picked fruit from the Gimblett Gravels, indigenous yeast fermented in 500 L puncheons to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months on lees in 40% new puncheon with 100% MLF, then undergoing a further 4 months on lees in tank."

"A gorgeous chardonnay, the inviting bouquet shows white nectarine, rockmelon, vanilla and hazelnut aromas with nuances of flint and oatmeal. The palate is concentrated and beautifully weighted, delivering fabulous fruit purity combined with stylish oak infusion, brilliantly framed by creamy texture and bright acidity. At its best: now to 2021."

"The winery's flagship 'black label' Chardonnay from Hawke's Bay is typically intense and finely structured. Grown in the Gimblett Gravels and fermented and matured for a year in French oak puncheons (30-35 per cent new), the 2016 vintage is a model of refinement. Retasted in May 2018, it is light lemon/green, with a slightly smoky bouquet. Still very fresh and elegant, with strong, vibrant grapefruit and stone-fruit flavours, mealy, biscuity notes adding complexity, and obvious potential, it shows excellent vigour, drive and length; best drinking 2019+."
