The Bandy is Back

Superb new release of this almost 'cult' wine. Made in a small quantity and available in only a few selected NZ outlets and at the Three Dark Horses cellar door in Australia. Previous vintages have been hugely successful at wine shows (including Golds & Trophy Champion Cabernet NZIWS). More importantly this label has developed a serious following with our customers who recognise the quality and value it offers.

Three Dark Horses is the project the of former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead with his father Alan and grandfather Frank (who recently passed away) – the Three Dark Horses. Their focus is on producing small batch, basket pressed, hand made, and affordable wines of character sourcing grapes from old vines throughout the McLaren Vale.

Best described as a "Blockbuster" – this 2022 is again inky dark (glass staining) with flavours of vanilla and ripe dark berry compote. Warming and inviting with a big, mouthfilling palate. Fine graphite-like tannins from the 14 months in French and American oak coat the mouth. The words 'sumptuous and generous' easily come to mind and, even as a young wine, is deliciously drinkable. It will also cellar very well. It totally over delivers for the price.

"Lifted aromas of red and black fruits, subtle perfume and wood spice. Flavours of blackberry and cassis. Some earth and a little spice. Medium to full bodied, plush through the palate with fine grained tannins and a subtle wood spice finish.

McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon from the Home Block, Schuller Rd (Blewitt Springs). Vine age: 23 and 52 years. 9 day open ferment with regular pump overs. Basket pressed. 14 months in French and American oak (25% new). Bottled without fining."

"Wonderfully ripe and beautifully fragrant, the bouquet shows blackcurrant, sweet cherry, clove and cedary oak aromas, leading to a splendidly weighted palate offering succulent fruit flavours with plump mouthfeel. Well supported by silky texture and polished tannins, making it fabulously drinkable."

Established on a 22 acre vineyard in Blewitts Springs, South Australia, Three Dark Horses is located in the heart of a region known for producing magnificent red varieties, their vineyard producing Shiraz and Cabernet and including a section of 60 year old Cabernet vines. They focus on offering small-batch, hand-made, affordable wines of character that represent their unique expression of the McLaren Vale region.

The hand-made aspect is central and of highest importance to Three Dark Horses, with everything being hand made, with a shovel, basket press and with wild yeast reigning supreme.

Three Dark Horses produces variants of Shiraz, Grancahe, Touriga and Cabernet, with a milestone occuring in 2014 when they produced their first white wines, a Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, both from the Adelaide Hills. It began when Matt, a former winemaker at Coriole, was presented with a unique opportunity to make wine from Bruno Romano’s old vineyard in the Seaview sub-region of McLaren Vale. It was an offer from his father Alan and grandfather Frank that he could not refuse.
