Gold Medal & 95/100 – New World Wine Awards 2019
This label has become a firm favourite and probably no longer qualifies for the 'Dark Horse' name. The previous 4 vintages have been highly accoladed and we'd be surprised if this one isn't as well.
The Three Dark Horses label was created when Matt Broomhead a former winemaker at Coriole, was presented with a unique opportunity to make wine from Bruno Romano’s old vineyard in the Seaview sub-region of McLaren Vale. It was an offer that he could not refuse. Discussing the opportunity over a few cheeky wines, he teamed up with his father Alan and grandfather Frank and Three Dark Horses was born. In 2017 they purchased the Schuller vineyard, 22 acres in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale planted in both Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"From a single vineyard, Schuller Rd, Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale with a vine age of 20 -50 years. 100% basket pressed, 7 day open ferment with regular pump overs. 10-15% whole bunch inclusion. 12 months in new (40%), 2 year old (30%) and 3 year old (30%) French oak. Bottled without fining or filtration.
Dense and expressive. Aromas of forest berries, all spice and musk. Flavours of blackberry, plum and chocolate. Some spice and a touch of earth. Soft and rich with a plush mid-palate. Gentle but persistent tannin giving it flow and a long, even finish. Cellaring potential: 6 to 8+ years."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Magnificently fruited and hugely appealing, the wine shows blackberry, plum jam, vanilla, dark cocoa and cedary oak characters on the nose. The palate is equally gratifying with outstanding weight and concentration together with plush mouthfeel and silky tannins, finishing impressively long and delicious. At its best: now to 2030."
