This label has become a firm favourite and probably no longer qualifies for the 'Dark Horse' name. The previous 3 vintages have been highly accoladed and we'd be surprised if this one isn't as well.

The Three Dark Horses label was created when Matt Broomhead a former winemaker at Coriole, was presented with a unique opportunity to make wine from Bruno Romano’s old vineyard in the Seaview sub-region of McLaren Vale. It was an offer that he could not refuse. Discussing the opportunity over a few cheeky wines, he teamed up with his father Alan and grandfather Frank and Three Dark Horses was born. This is a small batch, hand crafted Shiraz from a single block of 70+ year old vines.

Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"From a single block on the old Romano Vineyard this is McLaren Vale Shiraz at its best. It opens with briary fruits, subtle spice and musk, then draws you in with dark berry flavours and firm yet elegant tannins.

Varietal aromas of dark berries and vanilla, with musk, spice and chocolate playing a supporting role. The palate has flavours of plum, blackberry conserve and coco powder. Some spice and a touch of earth. Soft and plush in the middle, with gentle but persistent tannin giving a long finish. The quintessential McLaren Vale Shiraz."

92/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, September 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Bit of whole bunch. Blewitt Springs. 20 year old vines. Smoky, spicy and herbal (bunchy), good perfume, crunchy boysenberry/blackberry. Medium-bodied, spicy and sappy, quite meaty and savoury, firm acidity and emery tannin play out on the finish. Quite N.Rhône-y, if you get my drift. Good stuff. A bit different, too."

Reviews for the 2016 vintage below…

NZIWS (2016 Vintage)
"Perfumed aromas of dark cherry, plum, thyme and roasted almond mingle among cedary background, well supported by plush mouthfeel and silky tannins."

Sue Courtney,, November 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Bright and inky in the glass. Generous aromas of black cherry and mulberry and ultra decadent in the palate with mouthfilling flavours of creamy oak, chocolate, cherries, black forest cake, touches of liquorice and mocha on a cloud of plush tannins. Harmonious all the way through and irresistible for lovers of this style."
