There's nothing quite as gorgeous as a Riesling with a bit of bottle age and being able to pick up one of this nature at this kind of price, we really are spoilt. Lush stonefruits and ripe lemon citrus marry beautifully with subtle florals and hints of honey. This Riesling has developed more of a bees-waxey feel to the texture since we last tasted it, yet it is still bright and fresh with vibrant acidity and a fine mineral edge. Simply gorgeous.

"The fruit for this wine was sourced from a single vineyard on the southern terrace of the Waipara River. The vines were low cropped and sustainably managed on limestone rich soils to create a wine that is completely expressive of its origin and vintage.

A medium style of Riesling that is balanced with fresh acidity and has a focused minerality on the palate. Expect white flowers, lemon and lime on the nose. Grown on the alluvial soils of Glasnevin, Waipara, this is a true reflection of a Waipara Riesling."

One of his key learnings was to make picking decisions for Riesling based on acidity then to balance the wine with residual sugar, depending on the season. This must be why he makes such stellar wines for Crater Rim. This is one of my favourite off-dry whites under $25 on the market today. It is seven years old and tastes as fresh as a daisy. The Crater Rim takes its name from the twin craters of the ancient Akaroa and Lyttelton volcanos. Eruptions from these majestic landforms in ages past gifted the surrounding land with an enduring fertility.

The Crater Rim's first yineyard was planted above Akaroa township and the significance of this location in terms of its climatic effect on the whole region of Canterbury meant this brand would extend to include plantings in additional sub-regionsof Waipara, Omihi and Banks Peninsula and Central Otago.

Waipara, in North Canterbury's hills, is now the home base for The Crater Rim where specific sub-regional terriors contribute to the wines produced on their vineyards. Exceptional Pinot Noir is produced at The Crater Rim's winery site, Omihi Rise, also in North Canterbury. The Frahar Vineyard in Waipara also supplies Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

The Crater Rim is a frequent recipient of awards, including multiple medals in the New World Wine Awards and regular reviews by Sam Kim of Wine Orbit.
