Far from being in the shadow of Coleraine, Te Mata Awatea is a superb wine in its own right. A New Zealand classic that has the win win of being wonderfully perfumed and delicious in its youth but also carries ability to age gracefully for over a decade, not to mention the more modest price tag making it excellent value.

Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Deep magenta with a crimson edge, this is signature Awatea – a modern Hawke’s Bay cabernet with deep, pure fruit and bright, floral aromatics. Roses, violets, wild blackberry and dark plum, intertwined with notes of aniseed and thyme. Then, on the palate, immediate bright red and black fruits, blackcurrants, spice, raspberry syrup and a layered, almost saline, tannin structure with a refreshingly, fine, dry finish. Awatea ’16, as ever, is stylish Te Mata cabernet that totally over-delivers."

5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, February 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Overdelivering for the price, this delectable Bordeaux blend shows red/black plum, cherry, floral, dried herb and vanilla notes on the nose, leading to a succulent palate that is plump and silky. The wine displays bright fruit intensity and stylish oak undertones with excellent depth and complexity, superbly supported by fine, chalky tannins. At its best: 2019 to 2026."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Positioned below its Coleraine stablemate in Te Mata's hierarchy of Hawke's Bay, claret-style reds, since 1995 Awatea has been grown at Havelock North and in the Bullnose Vineyard, inland from Hastings. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc with a splash of Petit Verdot in most years since 2001 – it is hand-harvested and matured for 15 to 18 months in French oak barriques (partly new). Compared to Coleraine, in its youth Awatea is more seductive, more perfumed, and tastes more of sweet, ripe fruit, but it is more forward and slightly less concentrated. The wine can mature gracefully for many years, but is also typically delicious in its youth. The refined 2016 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (45 per cent), Merlot (41 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (14 per cent). Deeply coloured, it is fragrant, mouthfilling and supple, with concentrated blackcurrant, red-berry, plum and spice flavours, savoury notes adding complexity, and good tannin backbone. Already delicious, it should be at its best 2021+. Good value."

4 Stars & 18/20 Raymond Chan, March 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Deepish ruby-red colour with a dark heart, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegant and a little slender in presentation with piquant and fragrant aromatics showing dark-red berry and redcurrant fruit with entwined with subtle herbal notes, unfolding nuances of stalk and stem, with dark-red floral perfumes, and a suggestion of minerals. Herb and plum notes emerge in the glass. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant and taut with fine concentration of blackberry, blackcurrant and redcurrant fruit, along with hints of leaf and red florals. The fruit is up-front with some sweetness and underlined by fine-grained tannin extraction and fresh, edgy acidity. This has good linearity, and carries to a fragrant red-fruited finish. This will keep 6-8 years. Hand-picked fruit, a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 35% new French oak barrels."

Sue Courtney,, May 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Bordeaux character is the first aromatic sense of this bright crimson-tinged Cabernet-dominant red with cigar box, leather, earth, herb, polished French oak and harmonious berry fruit scents. Dry at first in the fine-tannined palate with all those lovely savoury, cigar box, leather and spice characters to the fore then a mouthfilling burst of succulent berry fruit and a slight herbal note to the sappy finish where the tannins are a little more assertive. Long and persistent."
