The previous 2015 vintage of this deservedly took out the top spot for New Zealand Pinot Noir at the Decanter World Wine Awards in the UK. This modestly priced, mid-tier wine from Te Kairanga in Martinborough was described by Decanter as "Beauty in a bottle". The 2016 Runholder Pinot Noir is rich and plush and reflects a good vintage, well established vineyards and deft winemaking by the very talented and experienced John Kavanagh.

Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The 2016 Runholder Pinot Noir is derived from six clones grown on our Martinborough Estate. Beautiful hues of red lead to an aromatic flurry of cherry, blackberry and spice with hints of whole-bunch ferment derived florals. The palate is velvety and complex with a long finish."

5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2016 Vintage)
"The wine is beautifully fruited and stylishly expressed, displaying fragrant aromas of red/black cherry, plum, floral, toasted almond and subtle warm spice notes. The palate is succulent and rounded, delivering pristine fruit flavours as well as silky texture and delicate savoury undertones. Wonderfully composed and styled. At its best: now to 2021."

92/100 Bob Campbell MW, November 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Tasted alongside Te Kairanga's Estate Pinot Noir, this wine had more intense fruit (cherry and plum) plus an interesting savoury edge. Altogether a more complex wine with greater density and longevity. Drink 2017 to 2022."
