Selected for the 2020 Fine Wines of New Zealand List
Te Awa Single Estate Chardonnay is a force to be reckoned with. This has been hugely popular recently especially with its price reduction taking it to $20.00. With impeccable pedigree it was selected for the 2020 Fine Wines of New Zealand list and is now well and truly recognised as one of New Zealand's premium Chardonnays. The superb 2020 from an excellent vintage follows on from highly regarded previous vintages and offers a top notch Chardonnay experience.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"This elegantly styled wine displays distinctive aromas of lemon verbena, peach and baking spice. The palate is full bodied with a touch of creaminess and smoky French oak supported by fresh natural acidity.
Te Awa Chardonnay is sourced from several of their best vineyard blocks, located on free draining gravel soils. These vineyard blocks grow three clones of Chardonnay which all contribute to the balance and complexity of the final wine. Most of these vineyard blocks are dry farmed and the grapes are grown organically. The 2020 vintage is no exception.
The 2020 vintage followed a warm and dry summer in Hawke’s Bay which has produced another outstanding Te Awa Chardonnay. In late February, the grapes were hand-picked in perfect condition and made the short trip to the winery to be loaded into the press as whole bunches. After a gentle pressing the juice was run directly to French oak hogshead barrels. The juice in the barrel fermented spontaneously with wild yeast and some underwent a natural malolactic fermentation. The young wine then stayed in barrel for 10 months with regular lees stirring, before being blended and prepared for bottling."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2020 Vintage)
"The refined 2020 vintage was estate-grown and hand-harvested in the Gimblett Gravels, and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak hogsheads. Bright, light yellow/green, it is still very youthful, with concentrated, ripe, peachy, citrusy flavours, finely integrated toasty oak, slightly smoky notes, and fresh acidity. It needs time; open 2023+."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, July 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"Another fine example of Chardonnay from the team making Te Awa. Aromas and flavours of fresh peaches and grapefruit, cashew nut oak and baking spices with a touch of smoke. Fine wood tannins with flavours of stone fruits and citrus, vanilla and a whisper of bacon (oak), youthful acid line, balanced and well made. Best drinking from purchase and through 2024."
