Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2021
We have seen more and more New Zealand versions of the Spanish/Portuguese variety Albariño hitting the market in recent times. It's a variety that seems to work well here right throughout the country. This one is part of the Left Field range from Te Awa in Gisborne and initially stands out due to its price but what's in the bottle measures up very nicely indeed. Bright, light and fresh it shows florals, stonefruit, tangy citrus and mineral. A fab alternative to crisp dry Rieslings or Pinot Gris.
Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Life’s a beach with Albariño. Originally grown on the Spanish coast, this expat is living a new life growing down under in Gisborne, New Zealand. An aromatic upstart that will duel for your affection with juicy peach and melon flavours to be so more than your holiday romance."
Reviews for the 2020 vintage below…
90/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"Ripe white fleshed fruits, spice, a fine lees complexity and youthful, fresh bouquet. Flavours on the palate include – white peach and lemon peel, a tangerine and saline layer, white flowers and fine leesy texture. Medium+ acidity, moderate alcohol and balanced, lengthy finish. Made to enjoy upon purchase and through 2022+."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2020 Vintage)
"Offering great value, the 2020 vintage is delicious young. Bright, light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling and strongly varietal, with very good intensity of vigorous, ripe, citrus and tropical fruit flavours, appetising acidity and a dry, lingering finish. (From Te Awa)."
4 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, June 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"Who would have thought that a wine made from a Spanish grape grown in New Zealand would be the perfect partner for this classic French recipe. There’s something about the clean, crunchy apple, pear and lithe, lemony layers in the wine which work wonderfully with the sweetness of the caramelised onions, the salty, earthiness of the goats cheese, the nutty depth of the walnuts and the fantastically flaky buttery perfection of the pastry. It’s a refreshing, fabulously floral style."
