Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2018
Gold Medal – New Zealand Wine of the Year Awards 2019
We have seen more and more New Zealand versions of the Spanish/Portuguese variety Albariño hitting the market in recent times. It's a variety that seems to work well here right throughout the country. This one is part of the Left Field range from Te Awa in Gisborne and initially stands out due to its price but what's in the bottle measures up very nicely indeed. Bright, light and fresh it shows florals, stonefruit, tangy citrus and mineral. A fab alternative to crisp dry Rieslings or Pinot Gris.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Gorgeous little citrus flowers link arms with melon and peach to dance in the sunshine, always maintaining an air of class. Meanwhile lime lingers in the shadows vying for attention."
4 ½ Stars, Top 10 & Best Buy, Cuisine Speciality Whites Tasting, August 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Made by Te Awa, the label represents their "whimsical approach to exploration, creativity and imagination." This style has an enchanting lightness and is freshly fruited with white peach and nectarine. The spicy ginger adds additional interest to this wine which also demonstrates terrific length."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2018 Vintage)
"Offering great value, the 2018 vintage, handled mostly in stainless steel (tanks and barrels), is a racy, strongly varietal wine. Fresh and full-bodied, it is youthful, with concentrated, peachy, citrusy, slightly spicy flavours, a touch of complexity, and a crisp, dry (2.5 grams/litre of residual sugar), lasting finish. (From Te Awa.)"
90/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, November 2018 (2018 Vintage)
"Aromatic albariño with citrus, mandarin, lime sherbet and white flower flavours giving a strong varietal identity. Fruity acidity almost masks a hint of sweetness and, together with fine tannins promotes a drying finish."
89/100 Rebecca Gibb, May 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Bright and zesty with floral aromas; round with nice texture, decent concentration and delicious acidity. The bright finish is full of pear, apple and florals."
