Silver Medal – International Wine Challenge 2017

We don't see a lot of single varietal Malbecs made here in New Zealand but if this deliciously rich and juicy fruit filled example from Hawkes Bay is indicative of Kiwi Malbec, then I reckon we'll see plenty more. Fantastic drinking and well received at our Te Awa tasting with winemaker Richard Painter.

Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Down a dark alleyway, the brooding and intense characters of blackberry and liquorice meet the heroically proportioned mass of dark chocolate draped in smooth, fine velvet.

The 2015 Hawkes Bay vintage was a great one for Red Wine with plenty of hot dry days throughout the season moderated by cool evening temperatures, which lead to wines with richness and concentration. The Left Field Malbec is a blend of two parcels of fruit from our vineyards located on free draining gravel soils. After picking in the cool of the morning, the grapes were gently processed to open top fermenters to undergo fermentation. The young wine was drained to tank prior to barrelling down for 12 months maturation in French oak barriques. After blending the wine was gently fined, filtered and bottled soon after."

Bob Campbell MW, May 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Deep, inky wine with typical malbec density and dark berry, spice and liquorice-like flavours. Quite high energy with bright acidity and fine tannins. Bit of a brute to drink but many will like its sheer power. Value at this price"

89/100 Natalie Maclean, May 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"A juicy, supple, luscious New Zealand red wine made from the Malbec grape, which is usually more associated with Argentina. However, this rendition is lovely with lots of fleshy black plum flavours. Pair with roast beef."
