Lush and polished, this Rasteau is delicious right out of the box. Leading the blend is fruit from Grencahe vines 80 years old, wrapping a generous texture around darker fruit and chocolatey spice flavours. A shining example of the village and a regular star in the Tardieu line up, the Old Vine Rasteau great buying.

Domaine Tardieu-Laurent was established in 1994. It is a partnership between Dominique Laurent, a former pattisier (and with the girth to go with it) and one of the hottest names in Burgundy, and Michel Tardieu, a dynamic young winemaker. Tardieu-Laurent is an extremely unusual operation in that they are a négociant only, buying young wines from growers all over the Rhône, which they mature and blend before bottling. They own no vineyards and don't buy grapes, only wine. Tardieu-Laurent is very much an "artisan" producer, making between half a dozen and 20 or so barrels of each wine. The majority of the wines are from the southern Rhône although superb cuvees of Cote Rôtie and Hermitage are also produced. The wines are all aged in small oak casks (often 100% new) and bottled with no fining nor filtration. Michel Tardieu proclaims himself as a confirmed terroirist, insisting that his aim with each appellation is to express powerfully the fruit and sense of place, never masking these factors with wood.

93/100 James Suckling (2016 Vintage)
"Brambly, dark and fresh fruit here with some spiced chocolate also in the mix. The palate delivers a wealth of plush, sweet-fruit flavour. Rich and fluid. Lots to like here. Drink or hold."

92-94/100 Jeb Dunnuck (2016 Vintage)
"The 2016 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes was one of my favourites in the lineup and this beauty has everything you could want from this appellation. Chocolate, black fruits, espresso and graphite aromas give way to a ripe, building, concentrated 2016 that has fabulous purity. It has plenty of tannins as well, but they’re mostly covered by loads of fruit at the moment. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy through 2026. Drink 2019 – 2026."

17/20 Jancis Robinson MW (2016 Vintage)
"Bright crimson. Hedonistic, heady, super-ripe nose with great lift and juicy refreshment on the finish. Masses of black fruit flavours overlay some very fine tannins. There’s something (agreeably) medicinal about this. And you could almost drink it straightaway. Although it clearly has a long life ahead of it. 65% Grenache (80 years old), 25% Syrah (40 years old), 10% Mourvèdre (40 years old). 66% destemmed. Terroir: Limestone-clay slopes and blue clay. Ageing: 12 months in one- and two-year-old barrels plus 8 months in Foudre (Allier – Tronçais). Drink 2018 – 2026."
