Gold Medal – New Zealand Aromatic Wine Competition 2019
Long time Marlborough farmers, the Jones family have three vineyards from which they source fruit for their Starborough label as well as growing fruit for other notable labels. With Two Rivers winemaker Dave Clouston making the wines they seem to be on a winning formula having picked up three Gold Medals already for the 2019. Starborough could well be the Star Sauvignon of this summer.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"A refreshing Sauvignon Blanc with richness of passionfruit, herb and mineral flavours. The nose is soft and elegantly proportioned with aromas of passionfruit, white floral aromas and nuances of fresh herbs and mineral notes. Lively on the palate and wonderfully structured by juicy acidity."
95/100 NWWA (2019 Vintage)
"From one of the pioneering families in Marlborough farming who have vineyards in both Awatere Valley and Marlborough’s main valley, the Wairau, comes an awesome wine made from ripe fruit from both regions. With flavours of feijoa, lime peel and passionfruit, it’s intense and lingering – a great complement to fresh Marlborough green-lipped steamed mussels or even ripe rock melon and slices of prosciutto."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2019 (2019 Vintage)
"Up front and intensely aromatic, the wine shows feijoa, passionfruit, kaffir lime and lemon peel characters on the nose, leading to a succulent palate that is wonderfully weight and persistent. It is fabulously drinkable with pristine fruit intensity backed by refreshing acidity. At its best: now to 2021."
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2019 Vintage)
"This label typically offers good value. Estate-grown in the Awatere (60 per cent) and Wairau (40 per cent) valleys, the 2019 vintage is punchy and freshly herbaceous, with strong passionfruit, lime and green-capsicum flavours, dry (3.5 grams/litre of residual sugar) and crisp."
