Gold Medal – New Zealand Aromatic Wine Competition 2019
Long time Marlborough farmers, the Jones family have three vineyards from which they source fruit for their Starborough label as well as growing fruit for other notable labels. With Two Rivers winemaker Dave Clouston making the wines they seem to be on a winning formula having picked up three Gold Medals already for the 2019. Starborough could well be the Star Sauvignon of this summer.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"A refreshing Sauvignon Blanc with richness of passionfruit, herb and mineral flavours. The nose is soft and elegantly proportioned with aromas of passionfruit, white floral aromas and nuances of fresh herbs and mineral notes. Lively on the palate and wonderfully structured by juicy acidity."
95/100 NWWA (2019 Vintage)
"From one of the pioneering families in Marlborough farming who have vineyards in both Awatere Valley and Marlborough’s main valley, the Wairau, comes an awesome wine made from ripe fruit from both regions. With flavours of feijoa, lime peel and passionfruit, it’s intense and lingering – a great complement to fresh Marlborough green-lipped steamed mussels or even ripe rock melon and slices of prosciutto."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2019 (2019 Vintage)
"Up front and intensely aromatic, the wine shows feijoa, passionfruit, kaffir lime and lemon peel characters on the nose, leading to a succulent palate that is wonderfully weight and persistent. It is fabulously drinkable with pristine fruit intensity backed by refreshing acidity. At its best: now to 2021."
Reviews for the 2018 vintage below…
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 (94) Raymond Chan, October 2018 (2018 Vintage)
"Bright, pale straw-yellow colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is firmly packed with aromas of pungent passionfruit and tropical fruits with fresh herb notes. The fruit aromatics show excellent concentration and density, unfolding floral nuances with aeration. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is rich and lusciously sweet-fruited with juicy, pungent passionfruit and tropical fruit flavours along with fragrant fresh herbs. The fruit forms a plush core with good depth and the wine flows along a fine-textured line with soft, mouthwatering acidity providing cut. The flavours carry to a long and sustained finish. This is a rich, sweet-fruited Sauvignon Blanc with a good core of pungent passionfruit on a fine line with soft, mouthwatering acidity. Serve with Pacific Rim fare over the next 2 years. Fruit from 65% ‘Starborough Terrace’ and 35% ‘O’Dwyers Farm’, fermented in stainless-steel to 13.1% alc. and 3 g/L RS."
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 Vintage)
"This label typically offers good value. Estate-grown in the Awatere and Wairau valleys, the 2018 vintage is freshly scented and fleshy, with very good weight and depth of tropical-fruit and herbaceous flavours, finely balanced and generous."
