Starborough wines have been making their mark over the past 3-4 years with their Sauvignon Blanc (Michael Cooper's White Wine Buy of the Year 2016 issue) and also with their consistently 5 star rated Pinot Gris. Made in the drier style with richness from partial barrel ferment and extended lees contact. It has nice weight and succulence showing excellent fruit intensity and a silken texture.

Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"An elegant wine with a finely concentrated palate displaying aromatic white and yellow stonefruits lifted by exotic florals, rose-petal elements and complex nutty and flinty nuances. The wine shows excellent fruit intensity and silky texture, leading to a lingering smooth finish."

5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, October 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"Bright, pale straw-yellow colour, lighter on the rim. The nose is fresh and full with good volume of aromatic white and yellow stonefruits, with pears and exotic floral notes, and honeysuckle, unfolding a layer of nutty lees and subtle oak elements. Dryish to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has well packed, rich flavours of stonefruits and pears, with nuances of exotic florals and honeysuckle, unfolding nutty lees notes. The mouthfeel possesses positive phenolic textures providing good presence, and crisp acidity lending freshness and energy. The fruit flavours carry with good linearity and some underlying power to a long and sustained, elegant finish of stonefruit and exotic florals. This is a well concentrated and structured dry Pinot Gris with good depth of stonefruit and pear flavours with florals and a complex layering of nutty notes. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 3-4 years. Hand-picked fruit, 40% ‘O’Dwyers’ Farm, 45% ‘Long Lane Vineyard’ and 15% ‘Starborough Terrace’, fermented in stainless-steel with 10% in seasoned French oak barrels to 13.5% alc. and 6 g/L RS, the wine aged on lees."

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"The attractive 2017 vintage is a blend of Awatere Valley and Wairau Valley grapes, mostly handled in tanks; 10 per cent of the blend was barrel-fermented. Invitingly scented, it is mouthfilling and vibrantly fruity, with strong pear and lychee flavours, a touch of complexity, fractional sweetness (6 grams/litre residual sugar), lively acidity, and excellent freshness, varietal character and harmony. Best drinking mid-2018+."

90/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2017 Vintage)
"An immediately appealing pinot gris, the bouquet shows backed apple, pear, citrus and spice aromas, leading to a beautifully supple palate that is juicy and silky. The wine delivers youthful fruit flavours and vibrant acidity, finishing long and smooth. Very friendly and flavoursome. At its best: now to 2020."
