Squawking Magpie owner Gavin Yortt and winemaker Jenny Dobson are producing some excellent wines and with a quality vintage such as 2019, there is some superb value to be had. From the Gimbletts Gravels The Chatterer Merlot Cabernets has plenty of depth in colour and flavour with a satiny, chalky texture. A great winter anti-dote!
Winery Notes (2019 Vintage)
"The "cradle of quality" for Squawking Magpie is the Woodlands Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels area, the first 4 hectares of which were planted in 1995. In 2002, a new 20 hectare vineyard was developed as a joint venture and planted predominantly in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. From the very first plantings, emphasis has been placed on creating outstanding wines by focusing on viticultural excellence.
This wine is deep in colour with a layered fragrant nose of ripe plum and cassis with lifted vanilla, cedar and tobacco notes. The palate has a rich velvet texture with excellent structure, ripe black fruits and cassis flavours with long full finish. Great cellaring wine for up to five years."
Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, April 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Ripe, sweet scents of dark berries and toasty baking spices of oak, violets, dark apple skin and roasted stone earthy qualities. Full-bodied, firm, tense, youthful and dry on the palate. Chalky tannins with medium+ acidity add layers of texture upon which the flavours of dark berries and red stone fruits sit. Fleshy, salivating and lengthy finish. Decant for service if required before 2023 then enjoy through 2030."
