Top Rated Red Blend – Andrew Caillard MW – Gimblett Gravels Annual Vintage Selection 2019

Squawking Magpie is a winery really hitting its straps at the moment with a superb range of wines. Being rated the Top Red Blend amongst a very strong line up of Gimblett Gravels reds from the excellent 2019 vintage is some achievement.

Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"Single vineyard, super premium, hand selected grapes. Aged in French oak for 20 months. An exceptional wine, huge concentration, a firm structure with intense fruit characteristics. This wine will cellar for up to 20 years!"

98/100 Andrew Caillard MW (2019 Vintage)
"Deep crimson. Beautiful blackcurrant mulberry chinotto espresso aromas with praline, vanilla notes. Generous, buoyant and supple with superb cassis, mulberry, boysenberry fruits, plentiful chalky tannins, attractive volume and underlying mocha, vanilla oak notes. Chocolatey/ cedar firm at the finish with seductive dark fruits and linear fresh acidity. Superb density, balance and mineral length. A standout wine."

96/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, September 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Merlot and cabernet(s) that spend 20 months in oak. Magnificent red wine set between a juiciness and freshness and all the strictness expected from fancy wine. Inky, plummy fruit but just on medium weight, a sheath of sleek, satiny tannins that draw the wine and create lines of detail in the palate. Smoky clove and pipe tobacco spice, new leather, game meat and dried herbs. So complex, so much structure, so wonderfully delicious to drink. An epic, world-beater."

Rated Outstanding & 96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, January 2022 (2019 Vintage)
"Enticing bouquet led by scents of roasted dark plums and blackberry, sweet toasty barrel with clove and vanilla pod then aromas of violets and sweet tobacco. A core of ripe red berry flavours and spicy, toasty barrel are emphasized by the an abundance of fine chalky tannins adding mouthfeel and chewiness. As the wine open up in glass the flavours of dark rose and violet emerge contrasted by dark plum and berry fruit, sweet oak and salivating acidity. There’s a saline note building on the complexity and length. Delicious, youthful, fresh and complex. Best drinking from 2023 through 2033+."
